A great live document of one of the greatest groups to emerge from the Chicago AACM and reach a larger audience during the 70s – the mighty trio of Fred Hopkins on bass, Steve McCall on percussion, and Henry Threadgill on reeds! The album's got a soulful and inventive approach that merges their Chicago AACM roots with a New York loft scene sensibility – organic improvisation at the core, carried off with a very open, free sort of sensibility – a bit less structured than the group might have sounded in earlier years. The 4 long tracks are a great showcase for their dynamic interplay – 2 recorded in New York and 2 recorded in Ann Arbor – and titles that include "Eulogy For Charles Clark", "Portrait Of Leo Smith", "Keep Right On Playing Thru The Mirror Over The Water", and "Be Ever Out". Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

A real treat – as Braxton plays work by Monk, blowing alto in a clean, clear, angular mode that echoes with a bit of Lacy, and shows some slight traces of Konitz as well. The group's a quartet – with Mal Waldon on piano, Bill Osborne on drums, and Buell Neidlinger making a surprising ... CD

Oliver Lake works here with guitarist Kevin Eubanks – a player who's mainstream moments might not seem like a match for Lake's more avant leanings – but a surprisingly great combination in the space of this mid 80s set for the Black Saint label! Eubanks has a way of matching Lake's ... CD

A great early Black Saint album from trombonist George Lewis – a key example of the way the AACM spirit thrived overseas, thanks to the efforts of labels like this! The work is quite serious and experimental – almost compositional in nature, and definitely heading towards the AACM ... CD
