Lawrence Hilton Jacobs

LP (Item 5186) ABC, 1978 — Condition: Sealed

Although he's always best remembered as Freddy "Boom Boom" Washington from Welcome Back Kotter, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs was pretty darn ubiquitous during the mid-70s! He was in more than a few movies (Youngblood, Cooley High, etc), and he even recorded a few soul albums – like this one, which features some nice production work by Lamont Dozier that more than makes up for Freddie's lack of conviction as a soul singer. At the best moments, the record reminds us of some of Lamont's strident grooving soul work for ABC – and titles include "Time Machine", "Larry's Theme", "Mister DJ", "Holdin On", and "Fly Away".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Four Tops

Catfish
ABC, 1976. Very Good+
A lot greater than you'd expect – like most of The Four Tops' excellent work on ABC. The classic Motown sound is no longer, but in its place is the same sort of positive 70s soul grooving that Lamont Dozier picked up on the label – a style that makes a perfect platform for the vocals ... Lloyd Price

Mr Personality
ABC, Late 50s. Very Good+
A key crossover moment for New Orleans soul – a full album's worth of work to follow-up on Lloyd Price's hit "Personality" – arranged and produced by Don Costa, with a sound to give the work just a bit more of a pop crossover appeal! Don's presence still doesn't dampen Lloyd's ... LP, Vinyl record album

OV Wright

Memphis Unlimited
Back Beat/ABC, 1973. Very Good-
OV Wright at the top of his game – working here with classic Memphis production from Willie Mitchell, and a sound that should have knocked Al Green right off of the charts! Wright's vocals have a rougher edge than Al's, and the record's really dripping with deep soul feeling – a slow-bu ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, 1977. Near Mint-
A great little concept album – and one that really shows the continuing sophistication and growth of Jerry Butler's music in the 70s! The record is dedicated to the "single girl" of the 70s (portrayed with the sad little photo of a brown bag lunch and a Gucci purse on the cover) ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roger (Roger Troutman)

Saga Continues
Warner, 1984. Very Good
Crisply popping grooves from Roger – a great solo record from the voice of Zapp! The Saga Continues finds Roger still rocking his trademark effects laden vocals and vamping guitar work into the middle of the decade – with even tighter syncopated percussion, funky keys, and sharp synth ... J Blackfoot

Physical Attraction
Sound Town, 1984. Sealed
A really nice little album from J Blackfoot – one that's recorded with a few 80s touches, but in a way that mostly preserves the sweetly crackling style that makes his vocals so wonderful! There's plenty of mellower tunes here that echo with the rich contribution that Blackfoot brought to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Jamalca
20th Century, 1974. Very Good
After Ahmad spent the 60s playing mellow acoustic piano, he turned into a great jazz artist on the Fender Rhodes – and this album is one of the best he ever made in that genre. The record has some great orchestrations by Richard Evans, and Ahmad's tone is very rich and full, with a great ... LP, Vinyl record album
