❔
A killer from Ahmad Jamal – a Fender Rhodes record that stands as a nice contrast to his equally great work of the 60s! Jamal was already a master of the subtle, soulful touch – and on Fender Rhodes, that quality comes out even more strongly – given some light support from arranger Richard Evans, who brings in some cool elements that are very much in the late 60s Cadet Records vein! Ahmad's tone is very rich and full, with a great soul sound – and the album features some great jazz funk covers – like a version of the classic break track "Misdemeanor", plus "Trouble Man", "Ghetto Child", and "Don't Misunderstand".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Vinyl has a short click on side two, but this is a great copy overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Argo, 1958. Near Mint-
Magical early work from Ahmad Jamal – a scintillating blend of piano, percussion, and bass – with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time, and which still sounds pretty much so to our ears! The album crackles with imagination and rhythm – really hitting on all burners ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1955. Very Good-
Beautiful work from Jamal's early Chicago years – and a perfectly titled set that really gets at the differences he made in modern jazz! The tunes are wonderfully fluid, soulful, and swinging – but not in the gutbuckety style of other trios of the time, more in a lightly modern style ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1962. Near Mint-
Stunning live work from piano genius Ahmad Jamal – still very young at this point, but already working with the fluid sense of imagination that would only unfold even more in the 60s! As with most of Jamal's live dates of the time, the balance of lyrical energy on the keys and rhythmic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Happy Moods
Argo, 1960. Very Good+
A sprightly set from the Ahmad Jamal Trio – but also a record that's not as brightly colored as you might guess from the title, thanks to a nice undercurrent of darkness in the mix! Jamal's piano work is often nicely punctuated – perhaps living up to the "happy moods" ... LP, Vinyl record album
20th Century, 1956. Very Good+
Very late material from Art Tatum – recorded at a private party in LA in 1956, and featuring the piano genius working his way through spare complicated solo versions of standards. Titles include "Yesterdays", "Body & Soul", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "I ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Ammons

Boss Is Back!
Prestige, 1969. Very Good
A great comeback for tenor legend Gene Ammons – not just in a musical sense, but also because Jug had spent most of the past few years in prison – as part of the usual trumped-up drug charges that were filed against musicians at the time! At the time of this album, Ammons had not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobbi Humphrey

Fancy Dancer
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good
Sublime genius from funky flute player Bobbi Humphrey – a record we'd rank right up there with her classic Blacks & Blues set – and like that one, another fantastic collaboration with producer Larry Mizell! The groove here is tremendous throughout – a heady mix of Bobbi's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto

Getz Au Go Go
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty! This album was recorded live, in 1964, when Stan Getz was playing with his quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes – an incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Clark

Cool Struttin'
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good+
One of the most legendary albums on Blue Note – or maybe THE most legendary albums on Blue Note – a stunning session that shows what the label was capable of when it was really hitting on all burners – from the lineup to the music to the production – and even the classic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Live Evil
Columbia, 1971. Very Good- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Kulu Se Mama
Impulse, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
One of our favorite albums ever from John Coltrane – but a record that's sometimes eclipsed by the genius of A Love Supreme! The feel here is very similar to that one – long tracks that introduce a new mode of searching, spiritual jazz for the 60s – one that's performed by a core ... LP, Vinyl record album
