Watusi

LP (Item 51807) Checker, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good
Hard grooving early work by The Vibrations – recorded before their sides at Okeh, with a style of rough-hewn soul that's very much in keeping with their hit "The Watusi". The album's got plenty of great numbers, very much in a Chicago dance mode of the 60s – and titles include "People Say", "Wallflower", "So Blue", "Doing The Slop", "Serenade Of The Bells", "People Say", and "Cave Man".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Denise LaSalle

On The Loose
Westbound, 1973. Near Mint-
A pretty sweet follow-up to Denise LaSalle's debut for Westbound – and like that set, another album recorded down in Memphis – with a razor-sharp sound that's far better than the treatment she got in later years! Arrangements are by Bowlegs Miller, who helped on the first – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Valerie Simpson

Valerie Simpson
Tamla, 1972. Near Mint-
Valerie Simpson really shines in the spotlight here, on an early solo outing for Motown – not yet paired with Nick Ashford at a vocal level, but still getting plenty of help from her future musical partner on both production and songwriting! The approach here is sometimes a bit more personal ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stax, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A musical – but a pretty darn soulful one, as you might expect from the mighty Melvin Van Peebles! The soundtrack features tunes from Van Peebles early 70s stage production Don't Play Us Cheap – an attempt to bring the modes explored in his film work to the theater – and given ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stax, 1967. Very Good+
The Memphis sound, working hard overseas – in a smoking live set that has some Stax Records stars working in Paris! There's a tightness here that arguably goes past the studio work by the singers – possibly because everyone's working in the same space, with the same backing group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Whispers

Whispers (1979)
Solar, 1979. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums by The Whispers – a later gem with some really great songs, and a sound that shows the group strongly moving into hit territory! In some way, the album's almost a return to the mellow harmony soul of the group's roots – slowing down the pace from the disco ... LP, Vinyl record album

Etta James

Etta James (1962)
Argo, 1962. Very Good+
Unlike some of her other early recordings, which tend to be raw screamin' R&B, this album's a beautiful set of ballads and weepers with arrangements by Riley Hampton, who also did stunning work like this for Lorez Alexandria and Walter Jackson. You might be tempted to call the album a sell-out ... LP, Vinyl record album

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes

Reaching For The World
ABC, 1976. Near Mint-
A really great post-Philly International album from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – the group's first after the departure of Teddy Pendergrass, and a set that shows them hardly missing a beat! The group are still recording at Sigma Sound, with Melvin at the production helm – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tyrone Davis

Turning Point!
Dakar, 1975. Near Mint-
One of Tyrone Davis' last albums for Dakar – and a great one too – issued in 1976 before the demise of that label, and Tyrone's big move to Columbia Records! Tyrone's still working strongly here in that great Chicago mix of smooth and rough – a sound first forged on his early ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Floyd

Down To Earth
Stax, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
Heavy heavy soul from Eddie Floyd – definitely a progression of his "Knock On Wood" sound, with plenty of bass at the bottom, horns blaring over the top, and Eddie's deep deep vocals in between. The record kind of takes the earlier Floyd sound at Stax and fuses it to the label's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A great 70s album by Roland Kirk – one that features him working on a lot of short tracks, in a pretty crazy style! A number of the tracks feature Kirk's uniquely quirky reed style in full effect – often processed with added studio techniques, in a very nice way. And along side that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Jefferson

Things Are Getting Better
Muse, 1974. Near Mint-
One of the weirdest, wildest albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – a real standout classic that shows him retooling his sound for the 70s! After years of writing lyrics to James Moody and Charlie Parker tunes, Eddie lays out some crazy lyrics for modern jazz standards like "Freedom Jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album
