We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

To The Max
Mercury, 1982. Very Good+
Snapping grooves and a sweet clubby sound from Con Funk Shun – one of the best 70s ensemble funk groups to make the transition to 80s groove years! The bass is tight, the keyboards are electric, and the rhythms are great – never forced or stiff, and always flowing with a sense of soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spirit Of Love
Mercury, 1980. Very Good
A stellar bit of boogie from Con Funk Shun – produced to perfection by Skip Scarborough, and done in a style that has lots of jazzy elements! The album was recorded well into the group's time on the Mercury label, but it's a real standout from the rest – thanks to an extremely well-writ ... LP, Vinyl record album

Organized Con Funk Shun
Pickwick, 1978. Good+
Early stuff by Con Funk Shun, recorded in 1973, and a lot funkier than some of their later work. The set went down in Memphis, and the overall sound is kind of a Bar-Kays-ish ensemble funk style, although with less of a heavy guitar groove. We're not sure if there ever was another pressing of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Message To The People
Mercury, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A classic bit of tripped-out soul from Buddy Miles – put together with a lot of nice psychedelic production, and an overall sound that stays nice and deep on the bottom end of things – and lets Buddy rock out heavily on rootsy vocals. There's no real standout funky numbers, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gap Band (1979)
Mercury/Total Experience, 1979. Very Good-
The start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cashflow
Atlanta/Mercury, 1986. Very Good
Mid 80s funky soul from Cashflow – a rare one cut for the Atlanta label, and produced by Larry Blackmon – a group R&B effort that seamlessly combines the club ready soul, funk, 80s rap influences and otherwise tightly thumping grooves Blackmon worked with at the time! Cashflow had ... LP, Vinyl record album

Power Of Love
Mercury, 1973. Very Good
An easy album to overlook, but not without some nice moments! Johnny Bristol produced the record, and he gives it a nice sweet 70s soul groove, similar to what he was using in his own work from the time. And typical of Jerry's albums from the early 70s, there's lots of nice original material, ... LP, Vinyl record album

LA Boppers
Mercury, 1980. Very Good
Sublime work from this jazzy harmony combo – a really unique group who took older vocal modes and fused them onto tight modern soul grooves! This set may well be the best-ever from the group – a perfectly produced album done with Augie Johnson of At Home Productions – with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Coming Back For More
Mercury, 1977. Sealed
A really wonderful post-Stax album from the great William Bell – a set that has the singer still stepping out with all those great deep soul modes from the 60s, but also finding a hipper, more laidback approach as well! There's a beautiful mellow vibe to the record – one that recalls ... LP, Vinyl record album
