We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Horace-Scope
Blue Note, 1960. Good+
Early 60s magic from Horace Silver – working here at the height of his youthful powers! The album's a perfect example of the sound that Silver created while at Blue Note – a lyrically melodic approach to soul jazz, but one that was able to open up the rhythms past stock riffs and ... Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great album from Shirley Scott – with some excellent arrangements by Gary McFarland! We've always felt that Shirley plays best when she's not leading the group – when someone else is handling the arrangements, so that she can groove mightily on her own – and this album is a ... Tjader
Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! A key factor to the greatness of this one is keyboardist Al Zulaica – who plays some amazing Fender Rhodes on the album, really unlocking a whole new sound of Cal's vibes in the process! The ... Blue Note, 1964. Very Good-
One of Stanley Turrentine's few organ-based sessions for Blue Note – recorded in the company of his lovely wife Shirley Scott, who was really a cooker on the Hammond! Argo, Early 60s. Very Good-
One of the 3 albums that organist Sam Lazar made for Argo, and the one that's probably his best! The obscure tenor player Miller Brisker is on the session, and he has a really unique approach to playing, with lots of unique twists, that spurs Lazar onto new heights of playing. Lazar wrote most of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Night At Count Basie's
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good-
Rare album of organ jazz by the lost Perri Lee trio. Lee was another one of the great female organists around in the early 60's – like Shirley Scott or Rhoda Scott – and she just wails in this live set recorded at Count Basie's nightclub in Harlem. A big added bonus on this album is ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pyramid
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
One of Cannonball Adderley's excellent moody electric albums from the early 70s – with a stripped down vibe that's really nice, made even better by sweeeet production by David Axelrod! The set's got great keyboard work by George Duke and Hal Galper – both working in a spare, subtle ... LP, Vinyl record album

Whirlwinds
MCA, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's ... LP, Vinyl record album
