Odetta Sings Folk Songs

LP (Item 517092) RCA, 1963 — Condition: Very Good
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

❔

(Mono pressing with deep groove.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Odetta

Odetta Sings
Polydor, Early 70s. Very Good
Quite different than the usual Odetta album – and a record that has the folk singer running through some hipper more modern numbers, often with a bit of a funky twist! Some tracks were recorded in Muscle Shoals with a small combo that includes Roger Hawkins, Eddie Hinton, and Jimmy Johnson ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1973. Sealed
One of the nicest early albums by this great 70s soul collective – featuring a strong mix of funk and mellow soul tracks, with backing by the Nite Liters on some tracks, and production by the great Harvey Fuqua throughout! Titles include "Wild Flower", "It's Been A Long ... LP, Vinyl record album

Vicki Sue Robinson

Vicki Sue Robinson
RCA, 1976. Near Mint-
Full on disco from Vicki Sue Robinson – a bit crossover at times, but handled with a top-shelf approach all the way through! Maestro Warren Schatz produced and arranged the set – and the tunes have a smoothly grooving approach that really lets Vicki flow out nicely in advance of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Samba Soul

Samba Soul
RCA, Mid 70s. Very Good+
Album of clubby, uptempo stuff, recorded in Rio, and with a bit of a Brazilian feel to it. The tracks are long and fast, and include medleys of "Girl From Ipanema/Manha De Carnaval" and "Chove Chuva/Mas Que Nada", as well as a few other Brazilian tracks. There's also a version ... Nona Hendryx

Art Of Defense
RCA, 1984. Near Mint-
Nona Hendryx at the height of her 80s glory – looking mighty fierce in a fencing costume on the cover! As with her previous set, this one's done with heavy help from Material – who bring in a beat heavy sound that's kind of a mainstream variation on the underground New York groove they' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Memphis Horns

High On Music
RCA, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the funkiest albums ever from The Memphis Horns – that super-tight instrumental combo headed by Andrew Love on tenor and Wayne Jackson on trumpet! Both players had years in the Memphis soul scene under their belt by the time of this set – and instead of just going for familiar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Odyssey

Odyssey (RCA)
RCA, 1977. Very Good
A crossover classic from the late 70s – a record that was born in the clubs, but bred in the mainstream – and the start of a very good relationship between Odyssey and RCA! The album will forever be known for its classic cut "Native New Yorker" – a seminal groover that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tousan (aka Allen Toussaint)

Wild Sound Of New Orleans
RCA, 1958. Very Good+
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint! The tunes are mostly instrumental – with Toussaint on piano, stomping up a storm with lots of wild playing in that heavy-handed, triplet-heavy 1950s New Orleans mode. The tracks romp along in a nice crescent ... LP, Vinyl record album

Main Ingredient

LTD
RCA, 1970. Near Mint-
A wonderful debut from The Main Ingredient – and a record that really shows the new style they'd bring to group soul music in the 70s! There's a righteous energy here right from the start – a mode that echoes some of the earlier New York groups of the late 60s, but which also focuses ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1969. Very Good
An amazing record by one of our favorite female soul groups! The Exciters were always great on their bigger girl group recordings of the mid 60s, but on this set, they really hit a cool sound – New York uptown production in the back, contrasted with the girls' raw soul vocals up in front ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1977. Very Good-
An overlooked funky classic from Chocolate Milk – and a set that still preserves the tight grooves of the group's earliest work! Allan Toussaint is still on hand this time around to help with both production and songwriting – and his touches can definitely be felt on the record – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stratavarious

Stratavarious
Roulette, 1977. Near Mint-
A great album of jazzy club tracks – put together by John Usry Jr, who'd done some work with other 70s club acts like Three Degrees, Love Committee, and First Choice. Most of the tracks on the record feature female backing vocals – in the style of work by those other groups – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
