Sarah does love Brazil – and the album's one of a number recorded in a Brazilian mode later in her career – in a way that really helped her breathe new life into her music by finding a different groove to work with! The arrangements here are relatively full – handled by Edson Fredrico throughout, and featuring players that include Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, Mauricio Einhorn on harmonica, Nelson Angelo on guitar, and Helio Delmiro on acoustic guitar – all wrapped up in a sound that's got the warmer jazz touches of the Brazilian scene of the 70s. The set was recorded in Rio, and Danilo Caymmi and Milton Nascimento provide a bit of guest vocals – and tracks include "The Face I Love", "Courage", "The Day It Rained", "Vera Cruz", and "If You Went Away". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Bridges" and "Someone To Light Up My Life".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Sarah Vaughan

Embraceable You
Laser Light, 1970s. Used
Great 70s live work from Sarah Vaughan – material that easily stands alongside her best for the Pablo label at the same time, but which is far more obscure overall! The notes on the CD aren't much – and obviously help enforce the obscurity of the sessions – but we can say that ... CD

Sarah Vaughan

Live In Japan Vol 1
Mainstream, 1973. Used
A 70s set from Sarah Vaughan, but one that's recorded in a classic small combo mode – acoustic overall, and a bit of a change from her other sessions for Mainstream Records! The date's a live one, and the tracks are taken at a looser level than some of Vaughan's studio work – a bit ... CD

Sarah Vaughan

Swingin' Easy
EmArcy/Polygram, 1954/1957. Used
Very nice jazz-oriented material that has Sarah working with Jimmy Jones, one of her best accompanists, or John Malachi, who was in Billy Eckstine's band at the same time Sarah was with the group. All the tracks have nice small combo instrumentation – and Sarah keeps things nice and warm ... CD
Columbia, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used 2 CDs
A great collection of pre-Mercury work from Sarah Vaughan – including some obscure material from 78rpm singles! Titles include "Pinky", "Perdido", "Black Coffee", "While You Are Gone", "Just Friends", "After Hours", "Ooh ... CD

Sarah Vaughan

No Count Sarah
Mercury, 1958. Used
The title's a bit of a joke – because the record features a batch sidemen from the Count Basie band – Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Freddy Green, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, and others – all working with Sarah, but the Count's name is missing, due to contractual obligations! Despite ... CD
Roulette/Blue Note, Early 60s. Used
Excellent early 60s work for Roulette Records – with work from Barney Kessel or Mundell Lowe on guitar on some tracks, and larger backings from Count Basie, Don Costa, and Jimmy Jones! CD

Ronnie Scotts, 1977. Used
Live recording backed by a trio featuring Carl Schroeder on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. CD
EmArcy/Polygram, 1954. Used
A jazz vocal masterpiece from Sarah Vaughn – one of her greatest albums ever, and a record that raised the bar for countless vocal sessions in years to come! Sarah's working here in an intimate group arranged by Ernie Wilkins – filled with famous trumpet solo work by Clifford Brown, ... CD

Ella Fitzgerald with the Tommy Flanagan Trio

At The Montreux Jazz Festival 1977
Pablo/OJC, 1977. Used
Ella Fitzgerald swings it nicely with the Tommy Flanagan Trio – a small group on the date for backup, but one who give this Montreux performance almost as much bounce as Ella's 70s live dates with a bigger ensemble! Tommy seems to have a bit more punch in his piano than usual, and Fitzgerald ... CD
Pablo (Japan), 1973. Used
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways ... CD

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass

Fitzgerald & Pass – Again
Pablo, 1976. Used
Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass return to the studio just a few years after their initial meeting – once again to work in a stripped-down duet format that's completely sublime! The spare setting is one that Ella never got in the older days – and there's an intimacy here that almost makes ... CD

Ella Fitzgearld

In Budapest
Pablo, 1970. Used
Ella Fitzgerald in Budapest – but swinging just as hard as on any of her other records from the time! The set's a later issue of an unreleased live date recorded in 1970 – a set that captures Fitzgerald right at the height of her international fame, at a time when she could captivate ... CD
