We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

ECM, 1970. Near Mint-
One of Marion Brown's more ambitious albums – and a key bridge from his freer work of the late 60s, to his more contemplative sides of the early 70s. The instrumentation on the set's a bit more expanded than on other Brown albums – with saxes by Anthony Braxton and Bennie Maupin, piano ... LP, Vinyl record album
Timeless, 1977. Very Good+
A beautiful late 70s set from reedman Marion Brown – maybe not as all-out adventurous as some of his earliest material, but still filled with a strong sense of spirit and soul! The group here is a bit unusual – as Brown's alto is set up with the guitar of Brandon K Ross, bass of Jack ... LP, Vinyl record album
Porto Novo
Arista Freedom, 1967/1975. Very Good+
US issue of Marion Brown's classic Porto Novo record, one of his best, recorded in 1967 in Holland with Maarten Altena and Han Bennink. Marion plays hard with these two European masters of free playing, and the 5 tracks from the session stand as a great demonstration of his early power. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1959. Very Good
A unique large group effort from Thelonious Monk – but one that bristles with all the angular energy of his other great work for Riverside! The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista Freedom, 1964/1975. Sealed
Classic early Ayler material, recorded in Copenhagen in 1964, at the same time as his earliest recordings issued on the Debut label! The album stands as one of Ayler's most powerful, and with performances that hint strongly at the ESP recordings that would follow shortly, and have become more well ... LP, Vinyl record album
Carnival
Arista Freedom, 1974. Very Good-
An unusual record for Randy Weston – a freewheeling live set recorded at Montreux in 1974, with Billy Harper joining Weston's group on tenor and flute, playing long spiritual solos that work wonderfully next to Weston's spiralling piano lines! Harper's searching quality really opens up the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tjader
Fantasy, Late 60s. Very Good
An excellent album from legendary vibist Cal Tjader – and one of his truly electric albums! A key factor to the greatness of this one is keyboardist Al Zulaica – who plays some amazing Fender Rhodes on the album, really unlocking a whole new sound of Cal's vibes in the process! The ... Tears For Dolphy
Black Lion/Arista Freedom, 1964. Near Mint-
Fantastic work from the team of Ted Curson and Bill Barron – a rare French session from 1964, one that captures all the brilliance of their American work from the early 60s! The set features the pair playing in an extremely fragmented mode – no doubt inspired by the recent loss of Eric ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pyramid
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
One of Cannonball Adderley's excellent moody electric albums from the early 70s – with a stripped down vibe that's really nice, made even better by sweeeet production by David Axelrod! The set's got great keyboard work by George Duke and Hal Galper – both working in a spare, subtle ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hot Dog
Blue Note, 1969. Good+
From the title, to the cover, to the gritty grooves way down in the wax – this has got to be one of the funkiest Blue Note albums ever – a real landmark from the legendary Lou Donaldson! The set kicks off with a hard and heavy groove from the very first note – thanks to some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Spiral
Arista Freedom, 1975. Very Good+
Not as revolutionary as Hill's work on Blue Note from the 60s, but still a great side from one of our favorite modernists, and one of his few 70s recordings to feature a larger group, not just solo or trio piano. Players include Ted Curson, Cecil McBee, Lee Konitz, and Stafford James – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
