We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1979. Very Good-
A Capitol killer from Natalie Cole – a really great record from the time when she really seemed to be starting out her career with a bang! As with other gems on Capitol, the record features some great production work from Marvin Yancy and Chuck Jackson, getting a bit of help here from Gene ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frankie Beverly and crew can't miss at this point – and as usual, Maze stands head and shoulders above most of its soul contemporaries from the time. The overall feel is nice and warm, with plenty of focus on Frankie's sweet smooth vocals – and the band grooves behind him in a slightly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Central Park Music Festival
Capitol/Music Images, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A pretty great little live set – recorded in Central Park in the late 60s, before a very large crowd! Lou sounds great, as always – and the Ramsey Lewis material is very much in the spirit of the live mid 60s Cadet recordings. Maxine Brown is the real treat, though, as the live ... Capitol, 1984. Near Mint-
O'Bryan's virtually a one man show here – handling vocals, keyboards, arrangements, and other instrumental bits too – but he also gets some great help on the album's lean arrangements, with just the right sort of funky touches on guitar, bass, and drums! The set starts out with a ... LP, Vinyl record album
For Those Who Love
Capitol, 1980. Good+
A fantastic moment from the Capitol Rare generation! The album is the first Capitol effort from Phil Perry & Kevin Sanlin – two excellent harmony soul singers who were part of the legendary Montclairs who recorded for Paula earlier in the 70s – and it's a slick batch of modern soul ... We don't know much about CM Lord, and this record's the only one we've ever seen from her, but she's got a nice deep soul voice, and the record's a great mix of southern-styled vocals and smoother LA backing. There's some slight country soul tinges to the cuts, but the best parts of the album ... LP, Vinyl record album
Carryin' On!
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good
One of Lou's excellent Capitol sessions produced by David Axelrod! The record's not an outwardly funky one, but Axe gives the set a nice loping groove on the best tracks – the sound that he brought to his best work with Rawls, and which really put him over the top back in the 60s. Capitol, 1978. Very Good+
Excellent work from Frankie Beverly and Maze! The record is one of the group's best, and has a wonderful mellow groove that's totally on the money on nearly every cut – a mature, sophisticated approach to soul that really made Maze a standout act at the end of the 70s! There's a slight ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1985. Near Mint-
A hard to find later album from Dayton – and a set that still has the group riding high at Capitol Records! Production and arrangements here are by Rahni Harris of the group – and there's a bit more of a chunky/funky sense of rhythm than before – that kind of jaunty way of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Feliciano!
RCA, Late 60s. Very Good
An amazing record! By all rights, this shouldn't be so good – but it's an incredible album of haunting tracks that really has us coming back again and again over the years. The formula is simple: Jose plays late 60s pop tunes on acoustic guitar, and sings them in his spacey soulful voice. ... LP, Vinyl record album
