Sonny Stitt/Bud Powell/JJ Johnson

CD (Item 516098) Prestige/OJC, 1949/1950 — Condition: Used
$7.99 ...

CD

Classic bop by Sonny Stitt – material recorded at the end of the 40s, originally issued as singles and 45s, but issued here as a full length set with a great cover image by Don Martin! The record features 2 different groups – one that includes JJ Johnson, John Lewis, and Max Roach; another that features Bud Powell, Curley Russell, and Roach – and in both instances, the players keep a sharp edge and tight focus that allows Stitt's tenor to soar out in those tight lines that made him a key bop figure from the get-go! Really classic stuff – with titles that include "Sunset", "Bud's Blues", "Tea Pot", "Elora", "Afternoon In Paris", and "Blue Mode". CD features 3 bonus tracks!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Constellation (Muse)
Cobblestone/Muse, 1972. Used
A return to basics after Sonny Stitt's late 60s Varitone and funk experiments – all-bop and all soul all the way through, and recorded with a tight quartet that features Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums! The style's a bit like Sonny's work of the late 50s, ... CD

Features Stitt on alto and tenor – plus Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. CD
32 Jazz, 1981. Used
A smoking little bop set from Sonny Stitt – recorded live at the Keystone in 1981, as sort of a "summit meeting" of horns – one that features Richie Cole and John Handy in the frontline with Sonny! The rhythm section alone is enough to cook this one up nicely – with ... CD
Prestige, 1972/1973. Used
Late work by Sonny Stitt on Prestige – 2 albums with a really great feel! Going Down Slow has Sonny hitting a groove that's a bit more laidback than some of his funkier albums for Prestige, but one that's still pretty darn great overall! The sound is almost in a Stanley Turrentine mode at ... CD

Personal Appearance
Verve, 1957. Used
Beautiful late 50s work from Stitt – filled with subtle complex solos, and a rich confident tone that was missing from earlier records! As with some of his other Verve sessions from the time, the track list is mostly standards – but unlike some Verve sessions, Stitt never gets lost in ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1968. Used
Nice mixture of boppish and swing-based material, and an excellent soulful session that has Illinois Jacquet playing in a stripped-down setting with Ben Tucker on bass, Alan Dawson on drums, and Barry Harris on piano, who adds a nice warm dimension to the set. Jacquet's tone is fantastic as always ... CD

Blue Mitchell

Blue Mitchell Big 6
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used
Blue in the main style of his early years at Riverside – working in an all-star group (the "Big 6" in the title), with players that include Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones. Blue's leadership isn't that strong – but fortunately, ... CD

Zoot Sims & Al Cohn & Tony Scott

East Coast Sounds
Jazzland/OJC, 1956. Used
A swinging east coast set featuring the reeds of Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Tony Scott. Trigger Alpert is actually the leader on these sides, in spite of the way the album is billed, and he plays bass in a piano-less rhythm section alongside Ed Shaughnessy on drums. The front line also includes Joe ... CD

Features piano from Red Garland and Shirley Scott! CD
Pablo/OJC, 1977. Used
Much looser than usual for Oscar Peterson, and we mean that in a good way – a very open-ended jam session recorded at Montreux in 1977, produced by Norman Granz with very much the same style as his Verve sets of this nature from the 50s! Peterson's billed as the leader, but the pianist has ... CD

John Coltrane

Traneing In
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used
A beautiful album that more than lives up to its evocative title – an early session from John Coltrane, filled with long tracks that slide along brilliantly! As with many other classic Prestige albums from Trane, backing is by the trio of Red Garland piano, Paul Chambers bass, and Art Taylor ... CD
