Turn Me Loose

LP (Item 515527) Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1979 — Condition: Used
Temporarily Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

Guitar-heavy fusion from Sweetbottom – one of those late 70s groups that definitely brought a rock into play with their jazz! In fact, this album's got more vocals than the group's previous efforts – definitely heading for the kind of mature, FM radio mode of the time – cats schooled on more leftfield work in the early part of the decade, looking for some more adult ways to rock out as the years went on. Titles include "Turn Me Loose, "Endless Fantasy", "She'll Never Be Back", "One Night Stand", "Do Some Damage", and "Flight To Maricaibo". (Includes the printed inner sleeve.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Angels Of The Deep
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint-
A tight set of fusion from Sweetbottom – an American combo who definitely seem to draw a lot from the rock-inspired Euro fusion sound of a few years before! There's also a bit of the PM Records vibe – from the Steve Grossman/Gene Perla camp – lots of sharp, fast changes in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1955/1956. Very Good
80s release of some rare sessions cut at Tristano's private Manhattan studio in the mid 50s, featuring spare trio tracks with Peter Ind on bass and Tom Weyburn on drums. The album is an essential chapter in Tristano's under-recorded career, and the tracks are a delight all the way through. Titles ... LP, Vinyl record album

A post-Blue Note effort, and Donald's changing things up a bit with his 125th Street Orchestra and Uptown Singers – funking along in a way you'd expect from the longwinded title! Byrd loostens up the smoother backgrounds of his recent Larry Mizell helmed work, and in their place are grooves ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1979. Very Good
An album that's quite different than Michael White's early solo work, but also quite nice too – although in a completely different way! Elektra, 1982. Very Good+
The group's second album – a nicely laidback album of soul and jazz tracks, produced by Grover Washington Jr with that clean and perfect sound he was getting on his own albums at the time. Includes the group's classic slammer "Mt Airy Groove" – a great old school hip hop ... LP, Vinyl record album
Captain's Journey
Elektra, 1979. Near Mint-
A masterful fusion set from guitarist Lee Ritenour – one that expands his sound a bit more than usual by adding in vocals on a number of tracks – but in a way that really gets at the mainstream soul influences that bubble through his jazz work! The set features key vocal appearances ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elektra, 1978. Very Good+
As the title says, Lenny White's streamlined his sound here – but to us that's a good thing, as it eliminates some of the overly-heavy jam sound that could ruin earlier records – making for a lean, clean groove that's mighty nice, and plenty darn soulful! Plus, Lenny's working here ... LP, Vinyl record album
Night Train Now!
Prestige, 1969. Fair
One of the first few funky classics from tenorist Rusty Bryant – a record that showed a whole new side of his talents, thanks to the addition of a rock-solid rhythm section! Prestige, 1963. Very Good+
A solid early 60s side by Johnny Hammond Smith and one that's unlike a lot of his other records from the time. This set was recorded with the great tenor player Seldon Powell, one of the few sessions where he actually gets a lot of room to solo, which we welcome whole-heartedly. Clement Wells is ...
