Greatest Hits

LP (Item 515312) Riverside, Late 50s — Condition: Near Mint-

All key late 50s recordings of these gems! Titles include "Brilliant Corners", "Jackie-ing", "Ruby My Dear", "Off Minor", and "Little Rootie Tootie".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Black label Bill Grauer Productions pressing with microphone logo.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Thelonious Monk

London Collection Vol 1
ORG/Black Lion, 1971. Sealed
Very late work from the legendary Thelonious Monk – but surprisingly great as well! The session was recorded in London – as you might guess from the title – and although Monk's not working with his regular quartet with Charlie Rouse, he does interact wonderfully with a trio that ... Riverside, 1955. Very Good-
Thelonious Monk plays the music of Duke Ellington – but as you can imagine, the sound here is quite different than usual! Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+
Not to be confused with the other Monk album of the name Misterioso, this one is a live set (which is maybe why they put "recorded on tour" in the title!) – done in quartet format with Charlie Rouse, and either Larry Gales or Butch Warren on bass, and either Ben Riley or Frank ... Riverside, 1959. Good+
Monk Monk Monk! A classic, with a lively quintet that includes Thad Jones, Sam Jones, Art Taylor, and the amazing Charlie Rouse, here just beginning a very fruitful association with Monk – and really adding a lot to the session with some incredible tenor work that's as angular and modern as ... Brilliant Corners
Riverside, 1956. Very Good
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Jimmy Heath

Swamp Seed
Riverside, 1963. Near Mint-
Early genius from Jimmy Heath – a set that displays both his talents on the tenor sax, and his growing role as a jazz arranger! Wes Montgomery

So Much Guitar!
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint-
So much guitar – but never too much, given that Wes was the real master of sound and space, even at this early point in his career!
