La Playa Sextet

LP (Item 515307) Embajador, Late 50s — Condition: Good
Titles include "Caliente Cha Cha", "Mambo Cha Cha", "Embajador", "Fantasia De Mexicana", "Melodia De Trumpeta", and "Chico Italiano".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono yellow label pressing. Vinyl has a number of marks but plays much better than it appears, just with some faint surface noise and occasional tic. Cover has half split seams, a stained corner at the bottom right, and some notes in pen in back.)

Good

  • A record that you'd buy to play, cheap, but which you wouldn't buy for collecting.
  • Will have marks across all parts of the playing surface, and will most likely play with surface noise throughout. May have some other significant flaws, such as residue, or a track that skips.
  • In most cases, a poor quality copy of a very difficult to find record.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Willie Bobo

Uno Dos Tres
Verve, 1966. Very Good+
Killer material, and one of Willie's best-ever albums for Verve! The album's filled with groovy numbers that hit the good mix of soul and Latin that was coming out of the New York scene at the time – and Willie delivers all of it with a tight jazzy sound that works great with the titles. ... Dos
Salsoul, 1977. Very Good+
A rare American session by Israel "Cachao" Lopez – one of a few sides he cut for the Salsoul label in the mid 70s, back at a time when the company had a strong commitment to traditional Latin grooves! Phyllis Hyman's nicely balanced here between the two key sides of her early career at its best – working with straight soul production from Chuck Jackson, and slightly more complicated grooves handled by Norman Connors! Elmer Bernstein

Walk On The Wild Side
Choreo/AVA, Early 60s. Near Mint-
One of Elmer Bernstein's best soundtracks of the 60s – written for this film set in the brothels of New Orleans in the 30s, with a mix of jazz and dramatic themes. The best cuts are the jazz-based ones – tunes that come across with more of a 60s groove than you'd expect, given the ... LP, Vinyl record album
