The start of a legendary run from superjazz brothers Randy and Michael Brecker – trumpeter and tenorist, respectively – already players who'd worked on a hell of a lot of previous sessions, both as a pair and on their own – finally stepping here into some well-deserved fame in the spotlight! The duo have a great lineup here – equally well-skilled contemporaries who include Don Grolnick on keyboards, David Sanborn on alto, Harvey Mason on drums, and Will Lee on bass – all working in a mode that's soulful fusion throughout, with just a bit of vocals at a few points, but mostly instrumental overall. The whole thing's got an approach that's smooth and tight, but never in a slick way – a groove that still sits wonderfully well after all these years! Titles include "Sneakin Up Behind You", "Rocks", "Levitate", "Some Skunk Funk", "Sponge", "A Creature Of Many Faces", and "DBB".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Bottom Line, 1976. Used
Wonderful live work from the legendary Brecker Brothers – cut at a time when the duo were still totally hard and funky – maybe even more so here than on their studio albums of the time! The live setting really brings out a crackle in the group – lots of funky rhythms at the ... CD

Brecker Brothers

Don't Stop The Music
One Way, 1977. Used
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's ... CD

Brecker Brothers

Detente
Arista/One Way, 1980. Used
An overlooked Brecker Brothers gem from the end of the 70s – easily one of their most soulful sets from the Arista years, and a record that's got way more lasting power than the Cold War reference of its title! The Brecker's are still rooted in jazz here, but definitely step out with plenty ... CD

Brecker Brothers

Heavy Metal Be Bop
One Way/Arista, 1978. Used
No heavy metal here – just tight and funky jamming from the mighty Brecker Brothers! There's a bit more guitar here than on some of their other records – hence, possibly, the title – but the whole thing's still very much in that mix of soulful fusion and jazzy soloing that the ... CD
Arista/FTG, 1984. Used
A funk, R&B and electro heavy set from trumpeter Tom Browne! There's a fair bit of beats on this set for Arista – no surprise, as Maurice Starr had a hand in the project – and the electro touches provide a real sense of contrast to some of Browne's earlier work! The best numbers ... CD

Jeff Lorber Fusion

Water Sign
Arista (Japan), 1979. Used
A landmark set of fusion from Jeff Lorber – the major label debut of his group, and the virtual blueprint for a sound that many would try to copy over the years, but never quite match! The style's almost a summation of the CTI/Kudu approaches of the mid 70s – with Lorber setting down a ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used
One of the hippest sets that Duke Pearson ever recorded – and an all-out Blue Note soul jazz set that's even better than Pearson's classic Sweet Honey Bee! Duke's style is deeper and more farther-reaching here – with echoes of styles used at the time by Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan ... CD

Four Miles
Triloka, 1997. Used

Muse/32 Jazz, 1989. Used
A nice little album of soul jazz organ tracks by Jack McDuff, and proof that he was always still burning strong! Unlike other Hammond players, who got a bit sloppy in later years, McDuff always kept things interesting, and managed to come up with some creative arrangements and soulful solos that ... CD
