We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Solar, 1981. Very Good Gatefold
Great stuff from the glory days of the LA bass-pedal funk era! The tracks manage to mix an 80s groove and soul without sounding cloying, and the band's vocals are always better than we remember them – with a strong harmony sound in the best moments that keeps things real. Tracks include ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stax, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most fantastic soundtracks of the 70s – and maybe even of all time – thanks to a non-stop blast of insane styles and grooves – all quite different than other blacksploitation records of the time! For this, his masterpiece film, Melvin Van Peebles composed a non-stop ... LP, Vinyl record album
Solar, 1981. Very Good-
One of the less-remembered acts of the Solar Records empire of the late 70s/early 80s – but a great one! Collage had a strong modern soul groove – taken especially well at midtempo, which is where the band really hit their stride. This album's produced by The Whispers – and in a ... Portrait Of Carrie
Solar, 1980. Near Mint-
Smooth disco grooving from Carrie Lucas – surprisingly soulful stuff, and handled with some wonderfully tight production by Dick Griffey, the genius behind the sound of Solar at the end of the 70s! Carrie's really moving past the cliches of earlier work here – stepping into a solid ... LP, Vinyl record album
Need Of Love
Warner, 1971. Very Good-
One of the two early Earth Wind & Fire LPs recorded for Warner – and the one that shows their amazing roots in the avant-garde jazz scene in Chicago. At the forefront, the record's a righteous soul album with an ensemble funk sound – but deeper in, there's a lot of jazz-based ... LP, Vinyl record album
Anacostia (1978)
Tabu, 1978. Near Mint-
Anacostia make the move to Tabu Records for this sweet second set – and they seem to have picked up more of a groove along the way! The same elements as before are firmly in place here – production by Charles Kipps, with supervision from Van McCoy – but the groove is a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blackbyrds
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
A funky jazz treasure – and the band's landmark first album! The Blackbyrds were a legendary 70s combo that were discovered by Donald Byrd while he was teaching at Howard University – and they had a tight style that mixed raw funk influences with smoother jazz playing, creating a sound ... Friends
Solar, 1982. Sealed Gatefold
A key album in the legendary 80s run of Shalamar – and a set that gets a tremendous amount out of a very stripped-down sound! The sound of Shalamar builds from a bit of bass, some snapping drums, waves of keyboards, and especially great vocals – warm and sweet, but never too commercial ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1980. Very Good
One of the most compelling later albums on Philly International – a killer mix of jazzy numbers that have a very different style than most of the other Philly work at the time! Even though Leon Huff had been banging around in soul music for about 15 years – most famously as half of the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Joy & Pain
Capitol, 1980. Very Good
Classic modern soul from the legendary Frankie Beverly! The record's perhaps one of their best remembered – most likely for the killer cut "Joy & Pain", which has a great hook that's been sampled many times over the years. The record also features the wonderful "Southern ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good- Gatefold
Quite possibly the funkiest album ever from Pleasure – and that's saying a heck of a lot! The album grooves from the very first note – and moves through some of the group's tightest, most rock-solid numbers – all of which use their trademark blend of funky and soul, but which ... LP, Vinyl record album
MGM, 1972. Near Mint-
Some of the warmest Memphis soul ever recorded – a really classic set from The Ovations, done in a style that's really unique! The vibe here is different from the sound of Stax, as lead singer Louis Williams has a lot of Sam Cooke in his style – a warmly bubbling quality that's as ... LP, Vinyl record album
