We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Solar, 1980. Very Good
Lots of musical adventures here – most of them in that tightly-romping style that made Dynasty so great back in the day – almost a fusion of older sweet group soul with some of the more bottom-driven modes forged by the Solar label! The title cut here is our favorite – a sweet ... LP, Vinyl record album

Whispers (1979)
Solar, 1979. Very Good
One of our favorite albums by The Whispers – a later gem with some really great songs, and a sound that shows the group strongly moving into hit territory! In some way, the album's almost a return to the mellow harmony soul of the group's roots – slowing down the pace from the disco ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love For Love
Solar, 1983. Very Good
Love for Love, but still a pretty groove-heavy set too – one that continues the mix of "dancin and romancin" The Whispers served up on their previous album! Side one is heavy on "dancin" – and features some bass-heavy tunes that are very much in the best mainstream ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solar, 1983. Very Good-
A popping party classic from the 1980s – filled with plenty of catchy electro numbers, all served up in a sublime blend of pop and soul! The Calloway brothers are at the height of their powers here – and the album strikes a perfect balance between mainstream soul and percolated ... LP, Vinyl record album

Black Ivory
Buddah, 1976. Very Good
A pivotal album for the group – released at a time when Black Ivory, like so many other east coast vocal groups, was making the transition away from an older sweet soul style to a more sophisticated club vocal sound. The group's producing themselves here – and we're guessing that most ... LP, Vinyl record album

Queen Of Soul
Harmony, 1960s. Very Good
Early work by Aretha Franklin – a collection of her work for Columbia Records during the 60s, sung in a mix of modes, from jazzy, to soulful, to bluesy. The style's pretty nice overall – although quite different than her later work for Atlantic – and tracks include "It's ... LP, Vinyl record album

On The Rise
Tabu, 1983. Very Good
Sweet sweet grooves from the SOS Band – definitely on the rise at the time, but still sounding great, with all the best elements of their early work firmly intact! The core group are very much at home in the studio – and have this cohesive sound that really comes through right away ... LP, Vinyl record album

Live At Pep's
Impulse, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
One of Yusef Lateef's most fantastic records, and an album that grooves in a way that few of his other ones do. Recorded live in 1964, this material was part of the same session that comprised the classic Club Date LP, which included the track "Brother John" (not on this album). This ...
