Top Of The Stax Vol 2 – Twenty Greatest Hits

CD (Item 514670) Stax, Late 60s/Early 70s — Condition: Used
$6.99 ...

CD

Massive music from this legendary label – a host of classic tracks from Stax Records, nestled nicely into one double-length collection! The package does a great job of covering the full range of Stax sounds – from deep soul to funky soul to group soul, bluesy soul, and lots more too. A handful of tracks here are from the 1968 and before generation – that time when Stax and Atlantic Records had a tight relationship – and the rest are from later years, when Stax was really humming on its own with a host of righteous music! Titles include "Show Me How" by The Emotions, "I've Never Found A Girl" by Eddie Floyd, "Soul Finger" by The Bar-Kays, "Private Number" by Judy Clay & William Bell, "Touch A Hand Make A Friend" by The Staple Singers, "Last Night" by The Mar-Keys, "You Don't Miss Your Water" by William Bell, "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Isaac Hayes, "Behind Closed Doors" by Little Milton, "Soul Limbo" by Booker T & The MGs, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" by The Dramatics, "Hearsay" by The Soul Children, "Respect" by Otis Redding, and "Dedicated To The One I Love" by The Temprees.  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Stax/Universal (Japan), 1976. Used
Hardly the disco set you might guess from the title – and instead, a surprisingly soulful gem from the post-Stax years of Isaac Hayes! There's certainly a bit of uptempo grooving in the mix – but, as on Ike's Polydor years, the approach is still handled with the deeper sounds that ... CD

A sweet little double CD – one that had some folks saying that Stevie should have stayed away from the "2LP syndrome", but for us a real treasure with lots of hidden gems. Besides the hits "Isn't She Lovely" and "Sir Duke", which were more than enough to carry ... CD

Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling ... CD

Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, ... CD

Solid soul from the great Teddy Riley – working here with his Blackstreet group, a tight harmony quartet formed after the breakup of Guy! The sound is perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than that of Guy, but no less inspired – as Riley was one of the kings of this sound at the time, ... CD

One of George Duke's best albums for the MPS label – and a set that has a sound that's a little bit more soul than before! The album uses a fair bit of vocals alongside Duke's funky keyboards – but in a way that's not nearly as smooth as some of his albums for Epic, and which still ... CD
