We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Contemporary, 1956. Very Good
Maybe the title's a bit overly-optimistic – but with a record like this, you can certainly imagine a world in which everybody does like Hampton Hawes! The record's the third in a legendary early run for the Contemporary label – trio material that broke Hawes out of the box and firmly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Baritone Madness
Beehive, 1977. Sealed
Baritone madness, and a lot more too – a set that's full of surprises, and which may well be one of the most striking records on the Beehive label from Chicago! The date not only features twin terrors on baritone sax – Nick Brignola and Pepper Adams, both blowing at the height of their ... LP, Vinyl record album
Four!
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good+
One of those classic Contemporary albums of LA jazz – where all the players are big names, and where the gang of them is goofing around on the front, looking happier than any New York jazzmen could ever be! Hamp's, joined by Barney Kessel, Red Mitchell, and Shelly Manne – all of whom ... LP, Vinyl record album
Dr Chicago
Beehive, 1985. Sealed
A nice hardbop revival session for Clifford Jordan – recorded with a style that takes us back to his first years on wax – with an excellent lineup, and a very strong focus on the dynamic of the ensemble! The lineup includes Red Rodney on trumpet and flugelhorn, Jaki Byard on piano, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Spiral
Arista Freedom, 1975. Very Good+
Not as revolutionary as Hill's work on Blue Note from the 60s, but still a great side from one of our favorite modernists, and one of his few 70s recordings to feature a larger group, not just solo or trio piano. Players include Ted Curson, Cecil McBee, Lee Konitz, and Stafford James – and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Truckin & Trakin
Beehive, 1984. Sealed
An overlooked gem from pianist Junior Mance – and maybe one of the most old school records he cut in the 80s! The set's a no-nonsense, soul-drenched session that maybe feels more like Prestige Records' soul jazz years than you might expect, given the date – with Mance on piano in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beehive, Late 70s. Sealed
A treasure trove of rare jazz recordings – all material that was cut during the short run of the Beehive label – that excellent Chicago imprint that was based along the ideals of recordings first put in place by Blue Note and Prestige! Beehive also grabbed a lot of players who worked ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista Freedom, 1975. Very Good
There might be a trumpet in Archie Shepp's soul, but the album features him on tenor and soprano sax – working in a wonderfully spiritual vein that's almost in the same mode as his early 70s work on Impulse! The album features some very long, drawn out tracks – but ones that build ... LP, Vinyl record album
Feels So Good
Kudu, 1975. Very Good
An incredible batch of electric funk from Grover Washington Jr – easily one of his best albums ever! The record really picks up from the sweet CTI sound of the 70s – taking Bob James arrangements with a lot of space and electric keyboards, and letting Groover blow some wonderfully ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1959. Very Good
A unique large group effort from Thelonious Monk – but one that bristles with all the angular energy of his other great work for Riverside! The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Higher Ground
Kudu, 1973. Very Good
Massive work from Johnny Hammond – stretching out here in some totally jamming grooves that really transform his style for the 70s! The sound here is a lot hipper and tighter than some of Hammond's more rough-edged soul jazz of the 60s – a groove that's a great precursor to his more ... LP, Vinyl record album
