Sir Elf

LP (Item 513933) Choice, 1973 — Condition: Sealed
The first solo set from Roland Hanna – even though he had a long and varied career in dating back to the 50s – and a gem of a timeless solo piano jazz recorded from the early 70s. It's probably the best record to his name, with warmth to spare, a few recorded in a small recital hall at Nola Studios, and couple in the intimate confines of a home living room. Wonderful! Titles include "Yours Is My Heart Alone", "Night Of My Lights", "There Is No Greater Love" "Walkin", and "Morning".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original 70s pressing – sealed.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roland Hanna

Destry Rides Again
Atco, 1959. Very Good+
A jazz version of a Broadway show, but an especially great one too – and a set that's really quite fresh, given the less familiar nature of the Harold Rome compositions! Hanna's presentation of the material really gets past the roots of the tunes – and he uses the songs as great ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre

River Chant
Choice, 1975. Near Mint-
One of the hippest, most spiritual sessions ever recorded from reedman Jimmy Giuffre – a set that echoes some of his earlier experiments from the 50s and 60s, but which has a very different mode of expression overall! Part of the quality of the record comes from the organic, often modal work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Defranco featuring Gordie Fleming

Waterbed
Choice, 1978. Very Good+
A really cool 70s album from reedman Buddy DeFranco – and one that resonates strongly with some of his groovy 60s work with Gumina! As with those records, this one features both clarinet and accordion – the former by Buddy, the latter by Gordie Fleming – used here in a match that' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joanne Brackeen

Snooze
Choice, 1975. Near Mint-
Dreamy open-ended tracks from pianist Joanne Brackeen – with a spiritual sound that almost reminds us of Alice Coltrane's best work on Impulse – and which represents a very different side of Brackeen's music than her better-known work with Stan Getz during the same time! Of course, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

Doctor Is In & Out
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+
One of Yusef Lateef's funkier albums for Atlantic – and a record that features some great keyboard work from Kenny Barron! The liner notes indicate a current Lateef fascination with rhythm, and it tries to present this fascination in a way that implies a bigger intellectual approach to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Let It Go
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A rare non-Blue Note 60s date as a leader from Stanley Turrentine – recorded for Impluse when his (then) wife Shirley Scott was contracted to the label – and featuring the talents of both players on some very groovy tracks! The quartet features both Stan's tenor and Shirley's Hammond ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Brown

This Is Ray Brown
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint-
One of the great Ray Brown LPs for Verve, featuring the legendary bassist in the company of Jerome Richardson, Herb Ellis, Osie Johnson, and Oscar Peterson (who plays organ on some cuts!). Cuts include "Jim", "Cool Walk", "Upstairs Blues", and "Bric a Brac". LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Never Let Me Go
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
Sweet and soulful early work from Stanley Turrentine – one of the few albums he recorded in the early 60s with wife Shirley Scott – then one of the greatest female organ players in the business! The album's got a easy going soul jazz feel that's a lot like the work the pair cut for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

In The Beginning
Prestige, Late 40s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. The set's an essential one, because although you often hear references to this material, most of it was originally ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Pepper

Way It Was!
Contemporary, 1957/1972. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums ever by Art Pepper – even if it isn't a proper album! The set features material recorded in the late 50s, pulled together to form an album in the early 70s – and overall, it's some of the best Art Pepper work on record we can think of. Pepper plays ... Horace Silver

Silver's Serenade
Blue Note, 1963. Near Mint-
A bit less well-known than some of the real Horace Silver classics on Blue Note – but an incredible record that shows the Silver Quintet at all its lyrical best! The record is a masterpiece of original voicings from Horace – not just in the unique tunes he penned for the set, but also ... LP, Vinyl record album

King Cole Trio (Nat King Cole)

Instrumental Classics
Capitol, Late 40s. Near Mint-
Nice Capitol album from the 50s, one that compiles instrumental sides by Nat King Cole and his tight little LA combo that forever changed the face of jazz and R&B. It's nice to hear Nat only on piano here – and backing by the great Oscar Moore on guitar is really a treat! Titles include ... LP, Vinyl record album
