Andre Previn's second take on the score to My Fair Lady – and a set that's not nearly as well known as his Contemporary Records version of the music with Shelly Manne! This date's a quartet session – featuring Herb Ellis on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Frank Capp on drums – and Previn gets plenty of room to show off his chops on piano, maybe even more so than before at Contemporary – moving through modes that range from mellow to quite frenetic, depending on the tune. Titles include "I'm An Ordinary Man", "With A Little Bit Of Luck", "The Rain In Spain", "You Did It", "On The Street Where You Live", "Get Me To The Church On Time", and "Without You". (Sealed mono pressing.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A definite monster from Herbie Hancock – one of those great records from Hancock's second chapter at Columbia Records – a time when he was really evolving as an artist, and able to take on the world of soul as well as he did with jazz and fusion! Great post-Mahavishnu work from guitarist John McLaughlin – the debut of his excellent Shakti combo, a group who mixed Indian music with some tighter fusion moments! A much different album than you might expect from the cover – hardly the funky 70s set implied by the Big Fun-styled cover – and instead a lost slice of work from his groundbreaking late 60s years! Great set that reissues material from 2 live albums that were never properly issued in the US – Miles In Tokyo, recorded in 1964, with Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams; and Miles In Berlin, recorded in 64 as well, with the same group, minus Rivers, plus Wayne Shorter ... The cover might be a bit gimmicky – with a giant image of a hot dog – but the album's actually one of the more sensitive outings from keyboardist Bob James at the time – a really refreshing blend of modes and styles, served up on Fender Rhodes, Oberheim, and acoustic piano! A great little soul album from Herbie Hancock – but one that's often lost in the valleys between his bigger hits of the time! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in ... LP, Vinyl record album

A real 70s standout from guitarist Al Di Meola – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of most of his albums from the decade!
