We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Basie One More Time
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good
The genius of Basie meets the genius of Quincy Jones – a 60s pairing that's every bit as great as the 50s pairing of Basie and Neal Hefti! Jones and Basie worked together in a number of settings during the 60s – including a very successful album for Frank Sinatra on Reprise – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Illinois Jacquet Flies Again
Roulette, 1959. Good
A really beautiful set, recorded after Jacquet's Verve years, and one that features his tenor blowing easily and soulfully over some larger arrangements with a mellow late night sound. We don't mean to imply that the album's a sleepy one, though – just that it's got this great relaxed ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good
One of the few beautiful early albums cut by John Handy for Roulette – and an obscure session that has him playing alto with a quartet that includes a young Walter Bishop Jr. on piano. Handy here is fresh from his work with Mingus – and his alto is filled with fire and emotion, yet ... LP, Vinyl record album
Life Is Round
Columbia, 1973. Very Good
A classic album of spiritual fusion from this short-lived all-star group that included Harold Vick, Bob Moses, Jumma Santos, and Jack DeJohnette. Vick's at his moody soulful best here, in a mode that's similar to his Strata East work – and the record also features occasional vocals by Lou ... LP, Vinyl record album
Basie Plays Hefti
Roulette, Late 50s. Very Good-
Tremendous work from one of the greatest pairings in 50s jazz – the crack later group of Count Basie and the amazing arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti later went onto greater fame as a 60s soundtrack composer, but back in the day him and Basie were an incredible team together ... LP, Vinyl record album
Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Free Ride
Pablo, 1977. Near Mint-
A wicked bit of 70s funky fusion from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded with his old piano player from the 60s, Lalo Schifrin! Lalo arranged, conducted, and plays plenty of keyboards – giving the album a wicked groove that's a bit different than some of Dizzy's other 70s work – a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prelude
CTI, Early 70s. Very Good Gatefold
A million-seller, but also a record that no home should be without – and easily one of THE greatest keyboard albums of the 70s! The album's the one that features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines ... LP, Vinyl record album
Family
Mainstream, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
A nice bit of work from the lost soul jazz sax talent Paul Jeffrey! You may have seen some Paul Jeffrey records out there, and he did record a few with more than a nod towards the funky side of soul jazz, but this is a pretty straight ahead session, with a fairly large group under the supervision ... Honky Tonk A-La Mod!
Roulette, 1966. Very Good-
The soulful Hammond of Bill Doggett gets a sweet shift for the 60s – hitting a mod jazz mode that Bill no doubt inspired by his groundbreaking work of the 50s! The groove here is nicely snapping – in a space between soul instrumental work and jazz, with lots of tight guitar from Billy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Time Has Changed
LC, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Getting up there in years, and Groove Merchant has given way to Sonny Lester's LC label – but O'Donel is still a dope guitar player, and this LP has some tasty cuts like "Butta", which may be the first time the dairy product was used on a record to signify dopeness! The groove is ... LP, Vinyl record album
