An unusual set that's most likely recorded at the same time as Chick Corea's Sundance album, possibly contains some of the music from it, but also appears to have some different work too! Chick plays acoustic and electric piano, Hubert Laws is on flute and tenor, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Dave Holland on bass, and Horacee Arnold on drums – and the set was originally recorded by Sonny Lester – with a very similar vibe to Sundance. Tracks are long, and very spiritually expressive – as you'd guess with Shaw on the set – and titles include "Vamp", "Converge", "Waltz For Bill Evans", and "Sundance".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

New York Is Now!
Blue Note, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
"New York is now" – a pretty bold statement from saxophonist Ornette Coleman, but one that definitely shows his shift in role – from a major force on the LA underground of the early 60s, to an artist who was helping pave the way for a huge wave of growth on the New York ... LP, Vinyl record album

Reflections Of A Golden Dream
Flying Dutchman, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Lonnie Liston Smith grooves it hard here with his Cosmic Echoes group – mixing in a stronger dose of soul than ever before, yet still giving tracks a righteous feel overall! The approach here is a bit like that of Roy Ayers work from the 70s – still jazzy at its core and conception, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pablo, Early 60s/1977. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the best posthumous releases by the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – and a set that really captures the group at a perfect moment – when they were really beginning to stretch out a lot, yet still in a style that was mostly inside! The material was recorded in Berlin and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1966. Very Good Gatefold
Very groovy stuff! Although the bulk of the material on this album is "pops meet jazz", in the hands of Oliver Nelson, it's transformed into something wonderful – with just the right blend of jazz to keep things lively. The arrangements have a nice off-kilter sound that works well ... LP, Vinyl record album
