Cowboys & Colored People

LP (Item 512000) Atlantic, 1967 — Condition: Very Good-
Hip work from Flip Wilson – an early album on Atlantic Records, issued before his bit TV fame – and a set that's got exactly the kind of edgey vibe you might expect from the title! The set was captured live in a small club, and Wilson's got a very wide appeal in his presentation – that kind of warmth and charisma that made him a very important force in breaking the boundaries between audiences at the time – able to keep things interesting enough with maybe a wider societal range of topics than the personal humor of Bill Cosby, on routines that include "Staying On Too Long", "Midget", "Riot Suit", "Confidential Survey", "Cheap Hotel", and "Kids".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Laff, 1976. Very Good
A very "current events" oriented set – one that sums up a variety of bigger news stories of the time, spinning them all out with a hip, underground take on the events. Fantastic early work from The Dramatics – an amazing blend of sweet soul harmony vocals, Memphis soul production, and some other-worldly songwriting that far surpasses later work of the group. Arista, 1977. Very Good
Sweet modern soul with a sound that would get picked up on years later by the LA G-Funk scene. This is the second version of an album that was first pressed under the title Back On Top – repackaged here with a slicker cover during the early 70s, to cash in on the fame that the O'Jays were having at Phily International. Chi Sound/20th Century, 1980. Very Good+
A nice record of modern soul that got a bit overlooked at the time because of the poor fate of the Chi-Sound label.
