Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Modern Jazz Quartet

For Ellington
East West, 1988. Near Mint-
For Ellington is, obviously, a tribute to the Duke – but it's done in a really creative way that gets past any simple rehashed versions of his tunes! The MJQ's approach here is totally great – very different rhythmically than classical Ellington – in a way that pulls apart ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Last Concert
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Not really the last concert ever from the Modern Jazz Quartet – but a set that seemed so at the time, given that the group went their separate ways for a number of years! The record's got the combo in really top form – very much back to the basics of their early time on Atlantic ... LP, Vinyl record album

More From The Last Concert
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
More material from the famous Last Concert record from the MJQ – not really the last concert ever from the Modern Jazz Quartet – but a set that seemed so at the time, given that the group went their separate ways for a number of years! The record's got the combo in really top form ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Live At The Lighthouse
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
An overlooked later gem from the Modern Jazz Quartet on Atlantic – a live set recorded at the Lighthouse, and one with a funkier tone than some of the group's earlier work for the label! Milt Jackson seems to be a bit more in charge of the sound on this set – as the tracks have that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Fontessa
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good-
A classic set of high-class jazz from the MJQ – one that shows John Lewis' growing compositional skills, and the band's always tight ability to work in a compressed chamber format. Features the extended "Fontessa" suite, plus the tracks "Versailles", "Angel Eyes" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Modern Jazz Quartet (Atlantic)
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good+
One of the first MJQ albums on Atlantic – and a bit fresher than some of their later outings, when it seemed like they were churning records out at the drop of a hat! Titles include an extended medley of standards, all given the MJQ touch – plus the drum-heavy "La Ronde", and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1963. Very Good+
One of the grooviest 60s live albums from Herbie Mann – done in a style that's a bit different from the rest! Herbie Mann

Memphis Underground
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good+
A sweet soulful set from Herbie Mann – one that has the jazz flautist taking on the 60s sound of Memphis! This album was such a big hit for Herbie that it's easy to forget the sheer raw power of the group – a mighty quartet that included Roy Ayers on vibes, and both Sonny Sharrock and ... A lost treasure from Lennie's greatest years – a 2LP set of unreleased material, performed by a quintet that features Lee Konitz! Atlantic, 1955/1961/1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Excellent double LP set that brings together all of the material from Lennie's classic Atlantic LPs – Lennie Tristano and The New Tristano. The recordings are stellar stuff – of the sort that rewrote the book for modern jazz piano. The first LP has Lennie playing with Lee Konitz on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Stompin' At The Savoy
Atlantic, 1974. Sealed
A great blend of older jazz styles and the sweet 70s funk of Robin Kenyatta – served up with a hip sort of sparkle overall!
