This Is Love

LP (Item 510698) Mercury, 1964 — Condition: Very Good

Great arrangements really make this one sparkle – thanks to backings from Allyn Ferguson, done in that perfect mix of soft strings and shimmering brass that seems to work best for the vocals of Johnny Mathis! The album's got a feel that's full, but never in a too-lush or sleepy way – that perfect balance you find on Johnny's key classics from the early years – of which this album is certainly a real standout. Ferguson's backings have a subtle sense of drama, but never overdone – and titles include "Over The Weekend", "More", "You Love Me", "Poinciana", "The Touch Of Your Lips", and "Just Move Along Meadowlark".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono red label pressing. Cover has a split bottom seam.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sarah Vaughan

Magic Of Sarah Vaughan
Mercury, Early 60s. Very Good
Plenty of magic here – a record with a different sound than some of Sarah Vaughan's earlier work – but one that's still pretty great! The backings here bring in plenty of strings, and a bit of voices – going for a full feel that's a bit like some of the country soul albums of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Although mostly known for her 50's Latin recordings with Tito Puente and Xavier Cugat, Abbe Lane emerges here in the mid 60s, on an album of "many sides", with arrangements by Hal Mooney. The track list is about as erratic as Abbe's photos on the cover, a strange montage of shots that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Vaughan With Voices
Mercury, 1963. Very Good+
An unusual album for Sarah Vaughan, but a compelling one too – a set recorded in Copehagen with some Danish singers in the background – providing a pillowy cushion behind Sarah's lead, in ways that make for a wonderfully mellow record! Orchestrations are by Robert Farnon, who works ... LP, Vinyl record album

Fascinating Ernestine
Mercury, Late 50s. Near Mint-
A great slice of work from the early years of Ernestine Anderson – one of her key swingers for Mercury, and the kind of record that should have made her huge at the time! There's a hip-stepping quality here that points nicely towards the 60s – a bit more of a bounce in the backings, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Captivating work by Nina – working here in that unique crossover style she was using in the mid 60s – a blend of jazz and soul arrangements that were perfect for her intimate folksy style.
