We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Street Opera
Capitol, 1982. Very Good
Dang, these guys could never miss! Even in later years, Ashford and Simpson were still going strong – working here in a wonderfully mellow style that's as soulful for the moment as their mid 70s groovers were for that time. The album's got a sweet modern style that's pretty much in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

The second album from The Sons Of Champlin – a record that actually has the group shortening their name to The Sons, but expanding their sound past the jamming bluesy roots of their debut! The record's got a tightness that brings a bit of jazz into the mix – not much, in a way that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good
One of the great ones – produced by David Axelrod, with HB Barnum arrangements, and sublime vocals by Lou, who's really at his best in this sort of setting! The album features 2 hip monologues – "Righteous Woman" and "Dead End Street" – plus the famous sung ... LP, Vinyl record album

All Night Long
Capitol, 1982. Very Good
A great album of bass-heavy 80s groove tracks – and the second release by the oft-overlooked BB&Q Band! The record mixes up some nice keyboards with a spacey early breakdance sound, and they sound great over the group's tight rhythm, and surprisingly soulful vocals. The band was one of ... A bit silly at times, but still pretty great! Bill Cosby teams up with old LA cronie Stu Gardner to do a set of tracks that are parodies of other big soul artists of the early 70s – and thanks to Stu's good work with the music, most of the tracks work a lot better than you'd expect! A lesser-remembered gem from Brass Construction – and a tight bit of 80s groove that builds nicely on the group's ensemble funk work of the 70s! The group's still quite large, with a brassy finish that befits their name – but there's also a nice undercurrent of funky guitar, bass, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason!
