A beautiful late 70s set from reedman Marion Brown – maybe not as all-out adventurous as some of his earliest material, but still filled with a strong sense of spirit and soul! The group here is a bit unusual – as Brown's alto is set up with the guitar of Brandon K Ross, bass of Jack Gregg, and drums of Steve McCraven – in a format that often has the ringing tones of Ross' guitar working nicely with the introspective tones of Brown's alto sax. Some tunes are spacious and have a sense of sonic exploration, others are a bit more swinging, with some unusual rhythmic inflections from the guitar – and McCraven's nicely open sensibilities on the drums. And while the whole thing maybe isn't as all-out avant, the shift is actually a nice one in showing some of Brown's more personal, spiritual currents too. Titles include "Bosco", "I'm Sorry", "Soft Winds", "Fortunato", and "La Placita". (Dutch Timeless pressing. Cover has light wear & sticker spots.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

One of Marion Brown's more ambitious albums – and a key bridge from his freer work of the late 60s, to his more contemplative sides of the early 70s. The instrumentation on the set's a bit more expanded than on other Brown albums – with saxes by Anthony Braxton and Bennie Maupin, piano ... LP, Vinyl record album

US issue of Marion Brown's classic Porto Novo record, one of his best, recorded in 1967 in Holland with Maarten Altena and Han Bennink. Timeless (Netherlands), 1978. Near Mint-
A late 70s set from tenor maestro George Coleman – who was never recorded often enough! Columbia, 1964. Near Mint-
One of those key cases where Miles Davis took a familiar song and made it his own!
