We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

You, Baby
CTI/A&M, 1968. Very Good Gatefold
Nat Adderley demonstrates that he can be as funky as brother Cannonball in this nice set of short groovers recorded for CTI from the late 60s! The record is one of Nat's few funky ones, and he's got some nice backing by Joe Zawinul, Grady Tate, Ron Carter, and Jerome Richardson. Cuts have the ... LP, Vinyl record album
New Beginnings
Theresa, Early 80s. Sealed
Heavily spiritual work from pianist Joe Bonner – a set of solo tracks that flows with warmth and imagination only hinted at on some of his 70s sides! The tunes are all quite long, and have Joe carving out a post-Coltrane, post-Tyner approach to the keys that makes for some beautifully ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cabin In The Sky
Impulse, Early 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A very unique album by Curtis Fuller – quite different than any of his other records at the time! The session has Curtis blowing on tunes from the score to Cabin In The Sky – arranged by Manny Albam, and performed by a large group that includes Freddy Hubbard, Hank Jones, and Bob ... Warwick, 1960. Near Mint-
We're not sure what "soul-stream" is as a genre – but given the strength of this record, we'd be more than willing to grant it onto Curtis Fuller all by himself! The record's a gem that's even more obscure than Fuller's already-rare dates for Blue Note at the end of the 50s – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Juicy Lucy
Beehive, 1979. Sealed
A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label! Sal got his start in the Stan Kenton group, where he learned a great sense of color and phrasing – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Super-hip stuff from Horace – the third part of his United States Of Mind series, and a great electric-tinged set that features vocals by Andy and Salome Bey! The tracks are slightly funky, very soulful, and a real departure from Horace stock 60s Blue Note riffs. Harold Vick plays tenor, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy & Soul
Pacific Jazz, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Groovy stuff! We'd normally never say a bad word about Buddy (or else he'd sock us one!), but this album is particularly nice – as it features Rich's swinging late 60s group doing some pop/jazz covers of groovy 60s tunes, plus some very tasty originals! All tracks are pretty short, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold (reissue)
Stunning! This is David Axelrod's rare suite of tracks dedicated to saving the enviroment with a set of jazzy funky grooves! The record's probably his most baroque album ever, with a big group of jazz players that mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – plus a group of singers who ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse/ABC, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
Way nicer than some of Milt's earlier work – and one of the gems he recorded with bassist Ray Brown during the late 60s. The group's got a tight soul jazz stepping groove – with Monty Alexander on piano, comping along right over Ray's warm basslines in a very tasty way. Teddy Edwards ... LP, Vinyl record album
Doin' Allright
Blue Note, Early 60s. Good+
Doin Allright? Dexter's doing great on this one – working with that fully mature Blue Note sound of his – a rich approach to soloing that keeps the tracks cooking with excitement! The group on the set's an all-star lineup that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Horace Parlan on ... LP, Vinyl record album
