A lovely little vocal set from Tom Lellis – a singer that we only know from his 70s record on Inner City – and who sounds even better on this album! Lellis works in a style that's very much in the manner of Mark Murphy – jazz-based, but in a warm and breezy mode that borrows heavily from Brazilian jazz – and which has the singer really opening up alongside the instrumentation, not just sitting back with a simple delivery of lyrics. Lellis plays a bit of keyboards on the set as well – and he's working in a small group setting with help from some great talents that include Toninho Horta, Jeremy Steig, Kenny Werner, Romero Lumbambo, and Dave Kikoski. The whole set's got a wonderful feel – like some of our favorite indie vocal albums from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and the track list is an imaginative batch of tunes with a strong Brazilian influence, titles that include "Beyond The Sea", "Being Cool", "From Tom To Tom", "Luisa", "Be My Love", "Bridges", "Free Bossa", and "Falando De Amor".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

An overlooked gem from Mel – a great early album for Verve, one that's every bit as nice as his stellar work for the Bethlehem label! The set's got Mel singing with the Marty Paich orchestra – a good thing, too – as Marty's always been the best arranger for Mel's unique way of ... CD
Abbey Is Blue

Key early work by Abbey – no so much the "blue" album you'd guess from the title, but a session that's filled with the kind of anger and emotion that makes us love her so much when she's this good! The group here is very hip – an ensemble brought to the date by her then-partne ... CD

Voice That Is
Impulse/MCA, 1964. Used
At the time of this album, Johnny Hartman definitely was the voice that is – a singer with a new level of maturity for the 60s, and a voice that's far more masculine than the geeky look of the photo on the cover! Hartman's sound here is smooth and warm, but never in a too-commercial way ... CD
