Closer To The Source

LP (Item 5093) Curtom, 1978 — Condition: Used
Also available
Leroy Hutson — Closer To The Source ... LP 22.99

Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest albums ever by Chicago soul maestro Leroy Hutson! The set was recorded hot on the heels of the massive Hutson and Hutson II albums – and is done in a very similar style – with Leroy pushing 70s mellow soul to new heights through his masterful vocals, arrangements, and production. The album's incredibly polished, but never slick – a brilliant statement of soul that's gentle one moment, forceful the next – and always proud and powerful. Titles include "Closer to The Source", "Heaven Right Here On Earth", "Get To This (You'll Get To Me)", "You're A Winner", "Everbody's A Masterpiece", and "Where Did Love Go". (Original pressing, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

First Impressions
Curtom, 1975. Very Good+
Hardly the first album by The Impressions, despite the title – but a wonderful batch of modern soul tunes that proves that the group could groove long after Curtis Mayfield was gone! As with other Curtom gems from the 70s, the album has the group working with some really top-shelf help in ... LP, Vinyl record album
Heartbeat
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good+
A real dancefloor set from Curtis – recorded with some sweet Philly production from the likes of Norman Harris and Bunny Sigler – in the sweeping, soaring, strings-heavy mode of the Philly disco records of the time! And yes, this isn't classic Curtis from the righteous years – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1972. Very Good Gatefold
Curtis Mayfield's lasting classic – and an album that the world will remember forever! Natural Four
Curtom, 1974. Very Good+
Sweeeeet soul from the 70s! The Natural Four were one of the greatest soul harmony groups of the 70's – and their work on the Curtom label has an amazing "rough with the smooth" quality that really sets them apart from east coast groups of the time! Part of the strength of the set ... LP, Vinyl record album
Do It All Night
Curtom, 1978. Near Mint-
A clubbier album than usual from Curtis Mayfield – a mid 70s attempt to move onto the dancefloor, but a set that's still got the undeniable Mayfield charm! Half the tracks here were done in collaboration with disco maestro Gil Askey – and these numbers are longer tracks that soar and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1975. Near Mint-
A great album by Curtis Mayfield – filled with some excellent lesser-known gems! There's No Place Like America was Curtis' scathing testament to the State Of The Union – and it's got a hip political tone that's right up there with the best of his early 70s songwriting – perhaps ... Pure genius from Curtis Mayfield – and a record that's got all the righteousness and political power you might guess from the cover! Locked In This Position
Curtom, 1977. Near Mint-
Curtom's definitely fishing for a new sound by this point – and they've gone and pulled in outside help from the east coast, teaming the talents of Philly groove maestro Bunny Sigler with Barbara Mason, who was emerging as a club diva at the time. Every track is uptempo and club-oriented, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Check Out Your Mind
Curtom, 1970. Very Good-
Righteous late 60s soul from The Impressions – the group's last album with Curtis Mayfield in the lineup! Never Say You Can't Survive
Curtom, 1977. Very Good-
A great album of mellow soul tracks from Curtis Mayfield – laidback, slinky, and almost to his earlier work what Let's Get It On was to the early 70s career of Marvin Gaye! The album's got a warm, soulful vibe that's totally great – not as all-out funky or politically righteous as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddah, 1977. Very Good Gatefold
