Star Dance

LP (Item 508962) Inner City, 1976 — Condition: Near Mint-

One of the more compelling sessions from the left side of the Inner City jazz label of the 70s – work that's partly fusion, but with plenty of aspects that push it far from the mainstream! Leader David Friesen plays acoustic bass on the set, but he's in a group with John Stowell on electric guitar, and the mighty Steve Gadd on drums – whose propulsive approach really drives the sound of the record strongly on some of the group numbers. Reedman Paul McCandless plays oboe and English horn, both unusual choices, but instruments that work well here – with an angularity that matches soprano sax usage in fusion during the 70s, although a bit warmer at times. Tracks are somewhat short, and include some really compelling solo numbers – recorded with a wonderfully round, soulful sound. Titles include "Winter's Fall", "Duet & Dialogue", "Mountain Streams", "A Little Child's Poem", "1 Rue Brey", "Star Dance", and "Children Of The Kingdom".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

New Wine In Old Bottles (Inner City)
East Wind/Inner City, 1978. Near Mint-
A very apt title – as Jackie McLean sits in for a soulful session with the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – all "old bottles" at this point in their career, but working together beautifully to brew some very mellow "new wine"! The album' ... LP, Vinyl record album
