John Coltrane — Settin The Pace ... LP 14.99

4 long tracks with plenty of room to roam around – a perfect setting for a young John Coltrane to demonstrate his distinctly different approach to the tenor sax! The album's one of Trane's key classics for Prestige – a quartet side that features backing by the trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – very open, and uniquely creative – especially in some of the more surprising moments! Titles include a great version of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae", plus "Rise N Shine", "If There Is Someone Lovelier Than You", and "I See Your Face Before Me".  © 1996-2016, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Impulse, 1963. Used
Brilliant work – John Coltrane really opening up in his new spiritual mode of the 60s, hinting at the changes to come, while still keeping the modal groove of previous recordings! The record features tracks from a few different sessions from the years 1961 to 1963, but it holds together ... CD

Verve, 1957. Used
A great little session – and a meeting that was one of the best things to happen to the Oscar Peterson trio during the 50s! Stan's tone fits perfectly with the group here – and his playing next to the guitar of Herb Ellis recalls many of the fine strengths of the early 50s Getz sides ... CD

Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1961. Used
A beautiful live counterpart to Jimmy Giuffre's crucial Verve recordings Fusion and Thesis – performed here with a similar trio that includes Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass – really expanding upon ideas of jazz expression that Giuffre first put forth in his late 50s trio! ... CD
