Bohemio Y Poeta

LP (Item 506837) Fania, Mid 70s — Condition: Very Good
A collection of important early work by Ruben Blades – and easily one of the best examples of his tremendous talents in the 70s! The title is very well put, as Blades is both poet and bohemian on the record – hitting themes that are both personal and political in a way that other Latin singers would never touch, and handled here with arrangements that bring in not only a bit of jazz, but also some deeper shadings of color and tone that sparkle with almost soundtrack-like sophistication. Many titles are relatively longish, especially when compared to the work of his contemporaries, and titles include "Juan Pachanga", "Sin Tu Carino", "Paula C", "Pablo Pueblo", "La Mora", and "Canto Abacua".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light ring impressions, bent corners, and wear at the opening.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Ray Barretto

Message
Fania, 1972. Very Good+
One of Ray Barretto's hardest-hitting salsa albums of the 70s – a raw set of grooves that's got Ray moving away from the playfulness of the Latin Soul years, into a more righteous mode that's easily guessed at from the title of the set! The vibe here is very straightforward – with Ray ... LP, Vinyl record album

Orquesta Inmensidad

De Aqui Pa La Eternidad
Fania, 1989. Very Good+
An overlooked salsa smoker by Orquesta Inmensidad – a group who came to the Fania label later than most of the big stars, but who did some excellent work for the imprint during the 80s! Raul Gallimore leads the group on piano and vocals, and also handled arrangements as well – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Willie Colon

El Juicio
Fania, 1972. Very Good
Supposedly the end of Willie Colon's early "crime" career – as the title and cover imply that he's finally been brought to trial! Don't worry about Willie being beaten down, though, because the music on the album is every bit as fierce and powerful as ever – and features a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestra Harlow

Salsa
Fania, 1974. Good
Orchestra Harlow were already at the top of their game by the time of this classic early 70s album – yet they also managed to leap forward strongly too – both embracing and lending a name to the growing salsa movement of the time! Mongo Santamaria

Red Hot
Tappan Zee, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great Bob James-directed session from Mongo Santamaria – and a set that takes the fusion-inflected Latin work he was doing on the Vaya label, and blends it with an even tighter, sharper CTI Records vibe! The approach is a bit like that combination of underground Latin and larger label ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1955. Very Good+
A great collaboration between Perez Prado and trumpeter Shorty Rogers – one in which Rogers' solos sparkle brilliantly over the top of Perez's tight Latin rhythms – all in a style that's as moody as it is evocative and rhythmic! Tico, Early 50s. Very Good
Classic early work by Machito – recorded back when Mario Bauza was playing trumpet, and acting as his music director! The band has a good hard sound, with lots of strong jazz soloing, and plays with a fire that's missing from a lot of his later recordings. Tracks include "Asia ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Palmieri

Electro Duro
Coco, 1974. Very Good
A great little record from Charlie Palmieri – and one of his oddest! The "electro" in the title refers to a strange tinny organ that Charlie plays on many cuts on the record, a cool little instrument that gives the songs a nice twist. The backing's pretty great in the classic Coco ... LP, Vinyl record album
