CD (Item 506691) High Note, 2009 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

David Newman's really been catching our ears of late – stretching out way past his familiar "Fathead" roles on records like these – and hitting a deeply soulful vibe that's totally great! There's a few echoes of Newman's Atlantic Records past at points – but most of the set is solidly rooted in indie soul jazz territory, and slides along with a subtle groove that's mighty nice – often hung strongly on the full acoustic basslines of John Menegon, and featuring work from Steve Nelson on vibes, David Leonhardt on piano, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Yoron Israel on drums. Newman plays both tenor and flute – and titles include "Smile", "SKJ", "The Blessing", "Whispers Of Contentment", "Chelsea Bridge", "Romantic Night", and "Manha De Carnival".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Keep The Dream Alive
Prestige/Universal (Japan), 1978. Used
Slick 70s jazz funk from Fathead – an uncommon record in his canon, and a nice one! If you're more accustomed to hearing Newman in more of his bluesy southern R&B inflected jazz setting, this one's a groovy left turn – with a more polished touch here a la 70s Fantasy, with Wilbur ... CD

Blue Greens & Beans
Timeless (Germany), 1990. Used
A great take on the classic European mode of presenting an American tenorist with local trio backing – a date that has pianist Rein De Graaff providing rhythm for the duo of David Newman and Marchel Ivery! Newman's tenor opens up with a freer, more spontaneous vibe than on some of his more ... CD

Wallace Roney

High Note, 2004. Used
A nicely electrified set from trumpeter Wallace Roney – working here in a style that has plenty of moody backdrops on Fender Rhodes, plus some really snapping percussion from drummer Eric Allen! There's a sound here that's clearly inspired by 70s Miles, but which also moves through a range ... CD

Water & Earth
High Note, 2013. Used
A gem of a record from trumpeter Jeremy Pelt – and like some of his other brilliant albums, a set that really has him sparkling alongside some sweet Fender Rhodes! Pelt's trumpet has always been great – but here, in the company of keyboardist David Bryant, it really seems to find some ... CD

Dark Tree Vol 1
Hat Art, 1990. Used
Pure genius from Horace Tapscott – a record that really lights a new fire under his talents – and takes us back to some of the most expressive, most righteous jazz from the LA scene of the 70s! The quartet here features key LA player John Carter on clarinet – an instrument that ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1957/Early 60s. Used

Charles Mingus

Pithecanthropus Erectus
Atlantic, 1957. Used

Blue Note, Early 50s. Used
A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used
The title's exploding with Mingus, and the album is too – a completely classic effort for Impulse Records that's easily one of Charles' best of the 60s! Things are reigned in somewhat from the Mingus years at Atlantic or Candid, but the sound is still great – almost more focused than ... CD
