We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Three Quartets
Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
A great straight set from Chick Corea – one that has him playing acoustic piano throughout, and reclaiming some of the bolder jazz territory he first forged in the 60s! The tracks are long and soaring – very soulful in their construction, and played in a dynamic way that's surprisingly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Neo/Nistico
Beehive, 1978. Sealed
Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! Sal got his start in the Woody Herman band of the 60s – and although a standout there, he really shines even more brightly here in a small group setting ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Super-hip stuff from Horace – the third part of his United States Of Mind series, and a great electric-tinged set that features vocals by Andy and Salome Bey! The tracks are slightly funky, very soulful, and a real departure from Horace stock 60s Blue Note riffs. Harold Vick plays tenor, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cabin In The Sky
Impulse, Early 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A very unique album by Curtis Fuller – quite different than any of his other records at the time! The session has Curtis blowing on tunes from the score to Cabin In The Sky – arranged by Manny Albam, and performed by a large group that includes Freddy Hubbard, Hank Jones, and Bob ... Warwick, 1960. Near Mint-
We're not sure what "soul-stream" is as a genre – but given the strength of this record, we'd be more than willing to grant it onto Curtis Fuller all by himself! The record's a gem that's even more obscure than Fuller's already-rare dates for Blue Note at the end of the 50s – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Juicy Lucy
Beehive, 1979. Sealed
A great return to form for guitarist Sal Salvador – a player who didn't always get that much time in the spotlight in the 70s, until a big wave of fresh exposure from the Beehive label! Sal got his start in the Stan Kenton group, where he learned a great sense of color and phrasing – ... LP, Vinyl record album

A nice hardbop revival session for Clifford Jordan – recorded with a style that takes us back to his first years on wax – with an excellent lineup, and a very strong focus on the dynamic of the ensemble! Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
Funky mid 70s Herbie Hancock – one his funkiest albums of the era! Chevron/Standard Oil, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP

Truckin & Trakin
Beehive, 1984. Sealed
An overlooked gem from pianist Junior Mance – and maybe one of the most old school records he cut in the 80s! The set's a no-nonsense, soul-drenched session that maybe feels more like Prestige Records' soul jazz years than you might expect, given the date – with Mance on piano in a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mingus Dynasty
Columbia, 1960. Very Good-
A late 50s classic by the great Charles Mingus – his follow-up to the seminal Mingus Ah-Um, and a set that's got a very similar flavor! As with some of Mingus' best material for Columbia, the album has him working with a slightly larger ensemble, but still holding onto the intensity of his ... LP, Vinyl record album
