CD

D An inspiring set from pianist Donald Brown– working here in a group that features some especially nice work from Gary Bartz and Eddie Henderson! Bartz plays soprano and alto sax, Henderson trumpet and flugelhorn – and both players fill the album with soulful colors and well-spun solos – stretching out majestically to give the set a great deal of power, and really match Brown's imaginative compositions. Donald's piano lines are great too, and rhythmic support is from Buster Williams on bass and Carl Allen on drums – the last two points in a star of a quintet for the session. Titles include "Capteown Ambush", "Overtaken By A Moment", "New York", "Phineas", "The Human Impersonator",and "Do We Have To Say Goodbye". CD includes 2 bonus tracks; "Embraceable You" & "Insane Asylum".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Happy Ground (Muse)
Muse, 1991. Used
One of the few later Johnny Lytle LPs to maintain his classic vibes/organ/congas sound of his earlier years – in this case recorded with David Braham on organ and Sammy Figueroa on congas. As the title might imply, the LP features a remake of Lytle's classic "Happy Ground". Other ... CD
Muse, 1990. Used
The subtle genius of Cedar Walton never gets old – and even a record like this, cut at the beginning of his fourth decade in jazz, sparkles with a warmth and brilliance that few other players could match! The set's a nicely laidback one – with Walton leading a group of soul jazz ... CD
Muse/32 Jazz, 1988. Used
In our opinion, Jack McDuff never made a bad album – and this excellent later session is proof of that statement! The album's got a horrible cover – we'll state that from the start – but it's still a great batch of soul jazz organ tracks, played tightly by McDuff, with a group ... CD

Hank Jones on piano with George Duvivier on bass & Ben Riley on drums. CD
Muse, 1989. Used
A nice little album of soul jazz organ tracks by McDuff, and proof that he was always still burning strong! Unlike other Hammond players, who got a bit sloppy in later years, McDuff always kept things interesting, and managed to come up with some creative arrangements and soulful solos that pushed ... CD

Woody Shaw

Imagination
Muse/Savoy, 1988. Used
A late date for Woody Shaw, but a great one too – a bit more straightforward than some of his more righteous albums of the 70s, but still proof that Shaw is easily one of the greatest trumpeters of his generation! The album's got a laidback sort of feel, and features a fair bit of familiar ... CD

Michael White

Land Of Spirit & Light
Impulse, 1973. Used
Beautiful work from Michael White – one of the few musicians who can actually make us love the sound of the violin in jazz! White's working here in a style that's very much in line with some of the post-Coltrane spiritual soul jazz in Impulse in the early 70s – an approach that's free-t ... CD

Columbia, 1991. Used
A somewhat somber set from Wynton Marsalis – the second chapter in his Soul Gestures trilogy, and a ruminative effort that's filled with dark tones and textures! The album builds slowly – trumpet from Wynton and tenor from Todd Williams providing some bluer colors on top of rhythm from ... CD
