Mysterious Traveller

LP (Item 5060) Columbia, 1974 — Condition: Near Mint-
A new sense of focus in the Weather Report sound – that building, soaring groove that would become the group's trademark in the mid 70s – offered up here in one of it's first and finest examples! The approach is one to describe accurately on paper – but which is instantly recognizable as the Weather Report sound of the time – a flowing, stretching, organic vibe that builds equally from the talents of all players, and turns it into a wonderfully righteous groove! Senior members Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Miroslav Vitous are still at the core – alongside Dom Um Romaeo, Alphonso Johnson, and Ismael Wilburn. Tracks include "Mysterious Traveller", "Jungle Book", "Nubian Sundance", and "Cucumber Slumber".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has minimal wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sweetnighter
Columbia, 1973. Very Good+
One of our favorite albums ever from Weather Report – an album that has them picking up a bit more soul than before, and shaking off some of the experimental sounds of their roots – yet all in a way that still makes them one of the most revolutionary fusion combos of the time! Weather Report

Tale Spinnin'
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
A beautiful title for a beautiful little record – one that really does have Weather Report spinning out musical tales in sound – with a free-flowing and soulful sense of energy! Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! Duke Ellington

Hi Fi Ellington Uptown
Columbia, 1953. Near Mint-
One of Duke Ellington's standout sides for Columbia – a strong recording that revisits many of the best elements of his earlier work, and offers up some more sophisticated scoring for the 50s – thanks to extended track length in the LP generation! The tunes here are older ones, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Master
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
A gem of a session from Stan Getz – recorded in 1975, but unissued until the mid 80s! The set was probably lost amidst the flurry of more dramatic jazz recorded by CBS at the time – as it's a relatively understated session that has Stan blowing with acoustic accompaniment from Albert ... Herbie Hancock

Sunlight
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
An overlooked little gem in Herbie Hancock's 70s catalog – and a sweet set of funky tunes that adds an R&B edge to the Headhunters sound! Columbia, 1968. Near Mint-
One of the most gimmicky cover images ever used to sell the music of Thelonious Monk (and Monk himself hated the image) – but a key classic from his legendary years at Columbia Records!
