An incredible record from one of the freshest talents we've heard in years – singer/pianist Elizabeth Shepherd, an artist with a nearly timeless talent! In a world of Starbucks-era fake torch vocalists, Shepherd reminds us what jazz singing is really about – creative invention on the vocals, and a sense of free-flowing imagination that comes through from the very first note of her tunes! Instrumentation here is just piano, bass, and drums – but played in a super-funky way that reminds us of rare small label funk gems from the 70s – stretching out and soaring with a sound that's incredibly soulful. On top of these grooves, Elizabeth pens her own lyrics – sometimes to compositions by other jazz artists, often to her own wonderful tunes – all in a sound that's incredibly hip and never cloying – a real gem of a record that should set a whole new standard for her generation! (And Starbucks, you'd better keep your hands off this one!) Titles include "Start To Move", "Roots", "Four", "Circles", "Reversed", "Melon", "Ton Visage", "Along The Way", and "Just Getting By".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

ESL, 2008. Used
A remixed version of tracks from Nickodemus' excellent Endangered Species album – but one that still has all the rootsy soul of the original! As with that great set, most of the work here resonates in a blend of Latin and funky elements – sounds that are sometimes mixed together with a ... CD

Eli Goulart e Banda do Mato

Bicho Do Mato
Unique (Germany), 2001. Used
A wonderful bit of Brazilian soul – featuring vocals by Eli Goulart, a great singer with a style that reminds us a bit of Jon Lucien, touched with modes of some of the samba soul 70s generation! The album was recorded in Germany – but has jazzy backings that are perfectly in the mode ... CD

Phonorama

Retrology
Funky Juice (Italy), 2007. Used
Nothing too "retro" about this set, despite the title – and instead, the album's a really fresh batch of Brazilian-influenced grooves – served up with a fair bit of classic instrumentation in the mix, but also some of the leaner, more contemporary styles coming out of Italy in ... CD

Stride (Japan), 2006. Used
A beautiful tribute to the electric side of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – done by Jukka Eskola from Five Corners Quintet, in a mode that almost beats some of Freddie's classic work for CTI! The setting here is spare and simple – trumpet from Jukka, tenor from Timo Lassey, and bass, drums ... CD

Dream Of You

Dream Of You is one of Helen's best from the 50s, thanks to some great arrangements from Gil Evans! Evans' young and modern talents are a perfect fit for Helen's sadly icy vocals on the set – taking her to new places never reached on some other sessions that were trying for a warmer, sweeter ... CD
