❔

The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some breakout solos that show that all players are still deeply committed to a strong jazz sound. Titles include "Cold Duck Time", "The Generation Gap", "Kathleen's Theme", and their great version of "Compared To What", with the famous vocal by Les that made the track a soul jazz vocal hit! CD also features the bonus track "Kaftan".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Eddie Harris

Live At Newport
Atlantic (Japan), 1971. Used
Very cool sounds from the amazing Eddie Harris – a live set, cut at the popular Newport Jazz Festival – but one that's arguably even freakier and more freewheeling than some of Eddie's studio work for Atlantic! Eddie's horn is really plugged in for the set – a Varitone, which is ... CD

John Lewis

Jazz Abstractions
Atlantic (Japan), 1960. Used
Way more than just "abstractions" – as the set's a very focused batch of some of the larger ideas that John Lewis had about jazz – explored beautifully here away from the Modern Jazz Quartet! The album has Lewis working with frequent partner – and fellow third stream ... CD

John Lewis

Evolution
Atlantic, 1999. Used
Compelling solo piano from John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet! CD

John Coltrane

My Favorite Things
Atlantic, 1961. Used
Wonderful wonderful wonderful work from the legendary John Coltrane – and even though it's probably one of his best-selling albums of all time, it's still a treasure – and has an essential place in just about any jazz collection! We've heard the original title version of "My ... CD

Hank Crawford

From The Heart
Atlantic (Japan), 1962. Used
Warm and laidback soul jazz from the great Hank Crawford – cut in a relaxed mode that makes the set feel like some of the late nite smokers on the Prestige label at the time! Hank's alto work is perfectly placed on the set, and he's working with fellow Ray Charles bandmember David Fathead ... CD

David Newman

Fathead Comes On
Atlantic (Japan), 1962. Used
Early work from David Fathead Newman – so early, the cover has him listed as "Dave" on the front! The album steps nicely off Newman's early work with Ray Charles – and does plenty to establish him as a leader on his own – putting Newman's bold, soulful tenor right ... CD

Johnny Griffin & Matthew Gee

Soul Groove
Atlantic (Japan), 1963. Used
A heck of a soul jazz treasure from the 60s – and one of the hardest-hitting jazz albums ever issued by the Atlantic Records label! The vibe here is almost more Prestige Records overall – with very gutbuckety work from Johnny Griffin on tenor and Matthew Gee on trombone – on ... CD

Jack McDuff

Do It Now!
Atlantic (Japan), 1967. Used
Tight funky instrumentals from Brother Jack McDuff – an Atlantic groover that's probably closer to his late 60s gems for Cadet Records than it is his earlier work for Prestige! The solos are shorter, but they're packed nicely around the rhythms – played by a combo that features a young ... CD

Alice Coltrane

Ptah, The El Daoud
Impulse, 1970. Used
Our favorite-ever album by Alice Coltrane – a masterpiece of spirit and soul, recorded in a wonderfully open-handed style! The album's mostly a spare batch of tracks cut by Alice and her trio with Ron Carter and Ben Riley – but also features some guest work on sax by Joe Henderson and ... CD

Alice Coltrane

Translinear Light
Impulse, 2004. Used
Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving ... CD

Joe Henderson

In N Out
Blue Note, 1964. Used
A stone killer from the early Blue Note years of tenorist Joe Henderson – a key example of why the label had so much faith in him right from the start, and why Henderson's horn was quite different than so many other players of the 60s! There's a sharp edge here, but there's also a soulful ... CD
