Great waves of sound here from Surface – a set that has the trio sounding even tighter and more fluid than ever – perfectly blending midtempo rhythms with their warm and sweet harmony vocals! The vibe's a bit classier than the usual mellow soul of the time – almost with a jazzy sensibility, although served up in subtle ways – and in a way, there's a vision here that seems to set the tone for some of the group soul to come in the 90s. Titles include the huge "Shower Me With Your Love" – plus "Closer Than Friends", "I Missed", "Hold On To Love", "Where's That Girl At", and "You Are My Everything". (Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has an index label.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Luther Vandross at the top of his game – sitting right at the height of that crossover space in soul he virtually owned back in the mid 80s! Ronnie Dyson works here with the 70s hit soul team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy – the pair who brought great sound to Natalie Cole, and who work some similar magic with Ronnie! An album that crossed over for Deniece in a big way – and it's a great one, with crisp, lean pop soul production that's as gratifying as any of the era – with a few ballads that are totally top notch, too! Busy Body
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+
Classic 80s work from Luther Vandross – the kind of record that catapulted him from the soul music shadows into the major mainstream of the time! A big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! There's a definite crossover feel to the record – a style that takes Bailey's soulful vocals, and mixes them with lots of catchy hooks – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Energy To Burn
Columbia/Roadshow, 1976. Near Mint-
A killer set that's extremely well-titled – as BT Express were one of the hottest ensemble funk acts of their time! The Manhattans' first album for Columbia – and a monster LP that showed that there was no turning back for the group! Great later work from BT Express – a record with a sound that's cleaner, leaner, and more stripped-down than some of their earlier records! Columbia, 1976. Very Good
Blue-eyed soul from Boz Scaggs, with a decidedly Philly influenced sound to the production, which we'd hazard a guess comes more from the Hall & Oates side of town than the Sigma Sound axis. The genius of Earth Wind & Fire knows no bounds – and even on this double-length set, the group keep up their groove tremendously!
