Destiny's Dance

LP (Item 502813) Contemporary, 1981 — Condition: Near Mint-

With Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Dennis Moorman on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Ronnie Burrage on drums!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chico Freeman

Tradition In Transition
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint-
A well-titled set from Chico Freeman – as the reedman definitely takes older modern modes into new territory here – moving in almost Monk-ish space, but with some sharper, bolder tones overall! The album's a surprising one for an early 80s major label release – a great reminder ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico Freeman

Tangents
Elektra, 1984. Near Mint-
Surprisingly dark music for a mid 80s major label jazz album – especially one that features guest work from Bobby McFerrin! Chico Freeman's definitely keeping true to his adventurous roots here – blowing some sharply angular lines on a range of reeds, and exploring both older jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico Freeman

Pied Piper
Blackhawk, 1984. Near Mint-
A surprisingly great little set from Chico Freeman – and a record that seems to hone his best creative energies of the loft jazz years into an even hipper groove! The group here features Freeman on a wide variety of reeds – alongside John Purcell on saxes and oboe, Kenny Kirkland on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phineas Newborn

World Of Piano
Contemporary, 1961. Very Good
Maybe not a "world" of piano, but a real classic from Phineas Newborn – a record that marks a harder, more soulful sound than some of his 50s work – shaking free from some of his flowery touches on the keys, and digging much deeper into the groove of his Memphis roots! Another standout set from Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars – the kind of group who should have been a gimmicky way to promote his nightclub, but who actually managed to cut some of the best LA records of the time! The lineup here features Rumsey on bass, Bud Shank on alto, Bob Cooper on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Andre Previn & Russ Freeman

Double Play!
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good+
A goofy title and cover – but a really unique session of two-piano jazz, recorded with Russ Freeman and Andre Previn on the keys, plus only the drums of Shelly Manne to provide additional support! The sound is really great – and Previn's especially wonderful here, really stretching out ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly Manne, Andre Previn & Red Mitchell

Bells Are Ringing
Contemporary, 1958. Very Good-
An overlooked set from the late 50s show-meets-jazz run of Shelly Manne and Andre Previn – a cool jazz instrumental take on the score to Bells Are Ringing! As with other Manne/Previn pairings, the music is incredibly sprightly – some of the best jazz Andre ever recorded in the 50s, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Art Pepper

No Limit
Contemporary, 1978. Very Good+
A nice lost late number from Art Pepper – a freewheeling set of tracks that really show the influence of John Coltrane on Pepper's work – cut with a quartet that includes George Cables on piano, Tony Dumas on "blitz bass", and Carl Burnett on drums. The tracks are long, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Andre Previn

Pal Joey
Contemporary, 1957. Very Good
Surprisingly nice stuff – especially considering that the album was one in a string of Previn piano sessions for Contemporary – all based around Broadway themes as part of the success of his My Fair Lady date with Shelly Manne! This set still features Manne on drums – and Red ... LP, Vinyl record album
