Destiny's Dance

LP (Item 502813) Contemporary, 1981 — Condition: Near Mint-

With Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Dennis Moorman on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Ronnie Burrage on drums!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chico Freeman

Outside Within
India Navigation, 1981. Near Mint-
A great, expansive quartet side from Chico Freeman, where he's supported by John Hicks, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Freeman's playing and writing has always fused his journeyman years with the AACM with the soulful, full-toned south side approach of his father, Von Freeman, and a very post-Col ... Chico Freeman

Kings Of Mali
India Navigation, 1978. Near Mint-
One of Chico's better sides from the time, and a spiritual quintet session that has him playing on a number of different reed instruments in the company of Jay Hoggard, Cecil McBee, Anthony Davis, and Famoudou Don Moye. The tracks are long, and all written by Chico. Titles include "Look ... LP, Vinyl record album
Why Not (Japan), 1976. Near Mint-
Quite possibly our favorite album ever from Chico Freeman – a beautiful set that was originally issued only in Japan, and which has Chico hitting some of his strongest, most spiritual modes on record! Ornette Coleman

Tomorrow Is the Question!
Contemporary, 1959. Sealed
Tomorrow may be the question, but the record screams "today!" – and even this many years after its recording, this early set by Ornette Coleman has an energy and presence that cannot be denied! The sound here is kind of a rougher take on the mode that would gel more strongly on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly Manne

Alive In London
Contemporary, 1971. Near Mint-
Shelly Manne's always been a hipper cat than you might remember, especially if you've only heard his mainstream work – and if you need any convincing of that fact, just check out this searing electric set from 1970! The group here is virtually the same one who recorded with Manne for the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Something Else!!!!
Contemporary, 1958. Near Mint-
Pre-Atlantic work from Ornette Coleman – one of his first recorded statements in jazz – and one of his boldest! At some level, the complete Coleman sound isn't entirely in place here – as there's a bit of a trace of hardbop in the mix – not entirely, but just a bit. But at ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint-
Red Norvo's dragged his vibes out into a field of wildflowers – and while we hate to think what that's done to the sound of his instrument (not to mention his hayfever), we can definitely say that the album's a groovy treat from the decade when Red was turning out some of his finest music ... Contemporary, 1957. Very Good
A classic Kessel album for Contemporary – one that features Barney's guitar in a set of slightly larger backings, all arranged by Barney himself! The approach is a bit different from some of Kessel's more stripped-down albums of the time – as Barney works with instrumentation that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1962. Very Good
Wonderfully romping work from Phineas Newborn – and a great showcase for the harder side of his sound on the piano, something that didn't always show up on his RCA albums of the 50s! The style here has plenty of bluesy overtones – not in a cliched soul jazz way, but in an earthy mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Morgan Allstars

Reflections
Contemporary, 1988. Very Good
Excellent later work from Frank Morgan – the legendary LA altoist who first burned brightly in the bop generation, then came back to make really rich recordings like this! The set's got Frank in some really great company – a hip sextet that features Joe Henderson on tenor, Bobby ... LP, Vinyl record album
