Captured Alive

LP (Item 501996) Choice, 1974 — Condition: Sealed
One of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded by the legendary Toots Thielemans – a small combo session that stands in great contrast to much of the bigger studio work he was doing in the 70s! Despite the title, the record's a studio one and not a concert – but it's got a relaxed intimacy that's really great, and features plenty of long-drawn lines from Thielemans on the harmonica, all played with the sort of tone and phrasing that made him one of the greatest jazz players ever on the instrument. The rest of the group features Joanne Brackeen on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – all quite hip players that help Toots avoid the traps of sentimentality and commercialism that could sometimes hurt his work. Titles include "Dr Pretty", "I Never Told You", "Giant Steps", "Snooze", and "Stella By Starlight".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Toots Thielemans

Toots Thielemans Live
Inner City, 1982. Near Mint-
A wonderful live date from the legendary Toots Thielemans – and one that's got some especially nice electric piano interplay with his famous guitar and harmonica! There's a bit more of an edge to this record than some of Toots' more polished outings for bigger labels – and we really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sal Mosca

For You
Choice, 1979. Near Mint-
Beautiful solo work from pianist Sal Mosca – an under-acknowledged genius for mixing modern and lyrical modes! The set was recorded in Sal's own studio in the late 70s – you can't get more intimate than that – but there's a freely expressive quality that's really amazing, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Zoot Sims

Zoot Sims' Party
Choice, 1974. Near Mint-
LP...$4.99 14.99
Not as much of a party as you might expect from the title, but quite a lively little album – and possibly one of Zoot's best from the 70s! There's a tightly fluid feel to this record that we really love a lot – not one that's electric or slick, but served up by a great backing trio ... LP, Vinyl record album
Candid, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the most righteous albums that Max Roach ever cut – and a monumental jazz release from the heart of the Civil Rights era! As you can guess from the cover and title, there's a very political bent to the record – served up in righteous lyrics penned by Oscar Brand Jr, and sung by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Sun Ship
Impulse, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A double-length set, with double-organ intensity – two killers from the team of Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff! First up is Giants Of The Organ Come Together – and album that features long tunes that open up with the same sort of solo-heavy approach that you'd get on Holmes' Prestige ... Dizzy Gillespie

In The Beginning
Prestige, Late 40s/1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nice 2LP set that brings together a huge amount of pivotal work from the early bop years of Diz, including titles recorded for the Guild and Musicraft labels, as well as Prestige. The set's an essential one, because although you often hear references to this material, most of it was originally ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington

Hi Fi Ellington Uptown
Columbia, 1953. Near Mint-
One of Duke Ellington's standout sides for Columbia – a strong recording that revisits many of the best elements of his earlier work, and offers up some more sophisticated scoring for the 50s – thanks to extended track length in the LP generation! The tunes here are older ones, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz

Master
Columbia, 1975. Very Good+
A gem of a session from Stan Getz – recorded in 1975, but unissued until the mid 80s! The set was probably lost amidst the flurry of more dramatic jazz recorded by CBS at the time – as it's a relatively understated session that has Stan blowing with acoustic accompaniment from Albert ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Sunlight
Columbia, 1978. Near Mint-
An overlooked little gem in Herbie Hancock's 70s catalog – and a sweet set of funky tunes that adds an R&B edge to the Headhunters sound! Herbie's playing a heck of a lot of keys on the set – from Arp to moog to Rhodes, and everything in between – but the album never gets too ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brenda & The Tabulations

Dry Your Eyes
Dionn, 1967. Very Good
Incredible early work from Brenda & The Tabulations – one of the best male/female soul groups of their era, yet one that's often sadly overlooked! This album will more than display why the group are so great – as they have a unique quality that's soft and sweet, yet also deeply ... LP, Vinyl record album
