Live At The Village Vanguard

LP (Item 501853) Soul Note (Italy), 1985 — Condition: Near Mint-

Open, swinging live work from the George Adams/Don Pullen Quartet – and a set that shows both the group's sense of jazz tradition, and their willingness to play with it on their own terms! The tracks here are all quite long, jamming numbers – built on lively rhythms from the bass of Cameron Brown and drums of Dannie Richmond, and featuring a mix of exploratory solos and more swinging moments from Adams on tenor and Pullen on piano. Titles include a great reading of the Mingus tune "Diane" – plus "The Necessary Blues", "Intentions", and "Solitude" – all of which are over 13 minutes long!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Billy Bang

Fire From Within
Soul Note (Italy), 1985. Near Mint-
Plenty of fire here – a soulful, spiritul sort of energy that really sets the work of Billy Bang apart from any other players on his instrument! Bang's use of the violin here is really unique – almost as a fluid generator of tone and sound – one that's woven beautifully into ... LP, Vinyl record album

Steve Lacy

Flame
Soul Note (Italy), 1982. Near Mint-
A really sharp little album from Steve Lacy – recorded with a trio that features Bobby Few on piano and Dennis Charles on drums! There's a sense of force to the record that grabs you right away – a punch from Charles' drums and Few's piano, which is peppered strongly by Lacy's soprano ... LP, Vinyl record album

Regeneration
Soul Note (Italy), 1983. Near Mint-
A very hip little set – not just because of the players, but also because of the choice of material! Half the tracks are Monk compositions, and the other half by Herbie Nichols – so the record's filled with angular, modern tones that echo back to some key jazz moments of the postwar ... Jimmy Giuffre

Dragonfly
Soul Note (Italy), 1983. Sealed
A pretty electric set from reedman Jimmy Giuffre – a record that moves between fusion touches and some of the freer modes of Giuffre's later years! Jimmy himself is all acoustic – working on flute, soprano, tenor, and clarinet – but the group also features a fair bit of keyboards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dannie Richmond

Ode To Mingus
Soul Note (Italy), 1979. Near Mint-
A great ode to Dannie Richmond's longtime musical partner Charles Mingus – who'd passed shortly before this session – done with styles and sounds that are quite different than some of Richmond's other work! The album's got a definite blue tone – Richmond really feeling Mingus' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Change Of Season
Soul Note (Italy), 1985. Near Mint-
A killer tribute to the music of Herbie Nichols – played by a committed batch of modernists who are clearly inspired by his genius! Misha Mengelberg's in the group on piano – and his angular lines on the keys have plenty of Nichols and then some – lots of Misha's own inventive ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Note (Italy), 1987. Near Mint-
Art Farmer really found a great home for his music on the Soul Note label in the 80s – a place where he could continue to grow strongly, in ways that almost let him find a new sort of edge in his horn! This album's a wonderful example of the strengths that Farmer found at the label – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les McCann

Hustle To Survive
Atlantic, 1975. Sealed
Sweet funky soul from Les McCann – one of the best of his 70s albums that bring in a lot of vocals with the keyboards – and served up in some tight tunes that really pack a nice sort of punch! The album doesn't have the long jammers of some of McCann's other records from the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball Adderley

Lovers
Fantasy, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
Late stuff by Cannonball, with a dope spacey electric sound, no doubt due to some very nice keyboards on the session by George Duke. The album's a bit mellower than some of the others on Fantasy, but it makes up for that with a warm snaking mellow funk groove. Brother Nat gives a helping hand on ... LP, Vinyl record album
