Live At The Village Vanguard

LP (Item 501853) Soul Note (Italy), 1985 — Condition: Near Mint-

Open, swinging live work from the George Adams/Don Pullen Quartet – and a set that shows both the group's sense of jazz tradition, and their willingness to play with it on their own terms! The tracks here are all quite long, jamming numbers – built on lively rhythms from the bass of Cameron Brown and drums of Dannie Richmond, and featuring a mix of exploratory solos and more swinging moments from Adams on tenor and Pullen on piano. Titles include a great reading of the Mingus tune "Diane" – plus "The Necessary Blues", "Intentions", and "Solitude" – all of which are over 13 minutes long!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Deeply soulful work from Hamiet Bluiett – a set that's a bit more inside than some of his other work, but still with a great sort of edge overall! Soul Note (Italy), 1982. Near Mint-
Modernist clarinet at its best – handled deftly by Peter Kuhn, in a range of modes that moves between hard-swinging jazz and much more spacious, sonic textures! Sweet Lou
Blue Note, 1974. Very Good
Sweet Lou, but funky Lou too – a perfect blend of modes that makes for one of Donaldson's last great albums for Blue Note! Pacific Jazz, 1962. Near Mint-
A lost treasure from the glory days of the LA soul jazz bop scene of the early 60s!
