Tropico

LP (Item 501532) A&M, 1978 — Condition: Very Good
Originally: 6.99
A far reaching late 70s set from Gato Barbieri – a record that blends fusiony jazz funk, lush stings, and Latin rhythms and fluid solos on a varied batch of tunes! One of the more interesting things about the production is that those varied approaches often come into play within the same tunes – with clean, lean fusiony bass and percussion underneath swelling string accents, showing Barbieri was unafraid to intermingle myriad influences at the time. Titles include a take on Caetano Veloso's "Odara", plus "Poinciana (Song Of The Tree)", "Latin Lady" (which guest Carlos Santana trading solos with Gato over tropical jazz funk backing), "She Is Michelle", "Where Is The Love", "Evil Eyes" and "Bolero".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gato Barbieri

Gato Barbieri – Bahia
Fania, 1982. Very Good+
A lesser-known indie session by the great Gato Barbieri – a set recorded for Fania after Gato's dates for bigger labels in the 70s, but one that's done with a really full, professional sound overall! There's a fair bit of electric instrumentation in the mix – guitars from Joe Beck, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gato Barbieri

Gato – Para Los Amigos
Doctor Jazz, 1981. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Some of Gato Barbieri's best work of the 80s – an excellent live set from 1981 that's kind of a return to the drawn-out intensity of his years at Impulse! The group's got a good mixture of percussion, keyboards, and guitar – and the tracks on the set are mostly Latin-tinged numbers ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
We love this record! Although Gato Barbieri has put out a few snoozers in his career, this amazing first chapter of his Latin venture for Impulse is an incredible record throughout – one of the greatest Impulse sessions of the 70s! Gato returns to his native Argentina for the session – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Day In The Life
CTI/A&M, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
Mindblowing! This is when Wes Montgomery really starts to get interesting to us – when he's working with a top-line arranger like Don Sebesky, crafting some incredibly compelling chords over lightly jazzy arrangements and soaring strings, in a whole new mode of expression that would go onto ... Wes Montgomery

Road Song
A&M/CTI, 1968. Very Good Gatefold
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Age Of Steam
A&M, 1971. Near Mint-
A rare larger group session that Gerry recorded in the early 70s for A&M – done in a style that's smoothly soaring, and a wonderful 70s extrapolation of his talents on baritone sax. Players include Bud Shank, Harry Edison, Roger Kellaway, Howard Roberts, and Emil Richards – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Stylings Of Silver
Blue Note, 1957. Very Good+
A great Horace Silver album – and one of the rarest! The record features some top-line material that virtually defines Silver's post-Jazz Messengers sound – tracks that come out with a hard and heavy groove, yet which also have a lightness in the mix too – a sense of play and ... Leon Spencer

Sneak Preview
Prestige, 1971. Very Good
Forget the preview, because Leon Spencer is already the main attraction on this key early album for Prestige! The date may well be one of the organist's greatest – and is a lean, mean session cut with that stretched out funky style that Prestige was really laying down at the time – ...
