❔

With Wallace Roney on trumpet, Billy Pierce on tenor and soprano, Mulgrew Miller on piano, and Charnett Moffet on bass. Titles include "Angel Street", "Touch Me", "Red Mask", "Dreamland", and "Obsession".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lee Morgan

Sidewinder
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good-
A jazz classic if there ever was one – and the best-selling album ever by Lee Morgan, thanks to the use of the title track in a car commercial! Sure, you've probably heard "The Sidewinder" enough that you think you know the album already – but the rest of the tunes really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earl Klugh

Late Night Guitar
Blue Note, 1980. Near Mint-
A beautiful set from guitarist Earl Klugh – and one that really lives up to its title – a record that matches Earl's wonderful work on guitar with some sublime orchestral charts from Dave Matthews! The approach is definitely different than some of Klugh's previous work, and makes the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Sophisticated Lou
Blue Note, 1973. Sealed
A really unique album for Lou Donaldson – especially for his early 70s run on Blue Note! The session lives up to its title by offering up a batch of soulful ballads from Lou – tunes that really focus on his sweet lines on alto, yet set amidst some larger backing arranged by Wade Marcus ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thad Jones & Mel Lewis

Consummation
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the greatest records ever cut by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – way way more than a big band jazz session, and a fantastically hip batch of grooves that encompasses a wealth of styles! The Jones/Lewis group could sometimes sound a bit clunky and overhashed – but on this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Pullen/George Adams Quartet

Breakthrough
Blue Note, 1986. Sealed
Great work from the Don Pullen-George Adams Quartet – a great post-Mingus group that features Adams on tenor and Pullen on piano – along with Dannie Richmond on drums and Cameron Brown on bass! The sound of these sides is really wonderful – as inventive and exploratory as some of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Louis Bellson

Driving Louis Bellson
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good
Driving Louis Bellson indeed – as Louie's drums set the tone for this session, and let Charlie Shavers and Seldon Powell echo out with some really great horn work! Tunes all have a nicely open-ended feeling that gets the players out of the context of their larger group histories and ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody & Al Cohn

Too Heavy For Words
MPS, 1971. Near Mint-
Very nice, very laidback session that has Moody and Cohn trading solos on an easy batch of bop tracks, along with Barry Harris, Roy Brooks, and Sam Jones. The recording quality is at the usual high standard for MPS – although the set was actually produced by Don Schlitten, presumably in New ... LP, Vinyl record album
Moodsville, Early 60s. Very Good
Beautiful beautiful work from tenorist Gene Ammons – and an album that really demonstrates that during the 60s, one of Ammons' strongest suits was his work with a mellow tune or ballad! The tracks here are wonderfully laidback, but never sleepy – very soulful, and solidly put together ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Modern Jazz Quartet (Atlantic)
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good
One of the first MJQ albums on Atlantic – and a bit fresher than some of their later outings, when it seemed like they were churning records out at the drop of a hat! Titles include an extended medley of standards, all given the MJQ touch – plus the drum-heavy "La Ronde", and ... LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, 1956. Very Good
The title's a bit of a mouthful, but a good description of the way Cannonball was presented in the years before his soul jazz groove firmly kicked in! The "hi fi" is a bit overstated – as the album's pretty much of a straight jazz record, featuring Cannon blowing lead solos in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Kenton

Journey To Capricorn
Creative World, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the best of Stan's mid 70s albums – a very hip set of big band tracks that swings with a fluid and soulful approach that you wouldn't normally associate with the Kenton groove! In a way, the overall feel here is somewhere in the territory of some of Woody Herman's excellent early 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1955. Very Good
One of the most obscure small group sessions by trombonist Urbie Green – a heck of a great player who was too often lost amidst larger ensembles! The album's got Green playing both slide and valve trombone, in a quintet that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Dave McKenna on piano, Percy Heath ... LP, Vinyl record album
