LAX

LP (Item 499130) Prelude, 1979 — Condition: Sealed

As you might guess from their name, LAX hail from the west coast – one of the few groups from that part of the country to record for Prelude, and every bit as great as the club acts from the east! Ralph Benetar handles arrangements and songwriting here – and lead vocals are by Laura Lucero and Roy Galloway – trading off a bit between the tunes, but also singing together in sweet duet formation at times too! The quality of the set is higher than you'd expect from the cheesy cover – almost equal parts soul and disco – with tracks that include "Woman Ad Lib", "I Don't Wanna Be Under Cover", "Don't Stop", "Saturday Night Something Special", "Slow Disco Dancing", and "Dancin At The Disco".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Shrinkwrap is lightly shopworn.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Excellent club work by Patrick Adams – with a groove that reminds us a lot of his best work for the P&P label! Adams arranged and produced the record – and the record features some very nice instrumental work on keyboards, vibes, and ARP. Venus Dodson sings vocals on some tracks, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prelude, 1977. Near Mint-
A surprisingly soulful album for the Prelude label, and a great batch of smooth mellow tracks produced by David Porter in Memphis and Malaco. The record's got some tight harmony vocals, and a rhythmic approach that's more mellow soul than it is uptempo disco – although that doesn't stop the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prelude, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP
A self-titled classic from one of the great white heroes of the mainstream disco years – Theo Vaness' first album for Prelude, a bit poppy at times, but still pretty nice overall! Theo's vocals aren't really anything to write home about, but the overall sound of the record has some nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

You Send Me
Polydor, 1978. Very Good
A masterpiece – and don't pass it up! Sure, the date's a bit later than some of Roy's classic work, but the record's got a sound like no other – with a slow mellow jazzy style that shows Roy working at the height of his powers! There's some wonderful spacey production on the record ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philadelphia International, 1978. Very Good
One of Jean's classic Philly albums, recorded after she left Doug Carn, and started to make records as a solo artist. The record's got stellar production by Gamble & Huff and Dexter Wansel, and features a nice mix of up-tempo cuts and mellow ones. With the monster "Don't Let it Go to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Magic Love
West End, 1977. Very Good+
A classic set of disco grooves – initially recorded in Paris, then sweetened up strongly at the Sigma Studios in Philly! Phyllis Hyman
Buddah, 1977. Very Good
Far and away our favorite album by Phyllis Hyman – her first, and with lots of the same smooth jazzy soul touches you'd find in her work with Norman Connors! Phyllis is still as sophisticated as she is on later albums, but there's a bit freer style to the record – and Phyllis breaks a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ohio Players

First Impressions
Trip, Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+
One of the many obscure albums of material by The Ohio Players – material that was recorded in the late 60's by Capitol, but frequently repackaged and retitled in the early 70's to cash in on the big hit status of the band. The band has elements of their funky 70s style on Westbound – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chaka Khan

Naughty
Warner, 1980. Very Good
A great album of mellow modern soul tracks recorded in Chaka's post-Rufus years! The record was produced by the great Arif Mardin, the man who made so many of the 70s Atlantic soul records work so well – and he handled Chaka's voice with a sweet sweet sound that you don't always get on her ... Dennis Coffey

Goin' For Myself
Sussex, 1972. Very Good+
Classic funky groovers from Dennis Coffey – with his hard guitar sound gettin' all fuzzy over some loud drums and funky Sussex production! This one's still very much on the "Scorpio" vibe, when the label was keeping things nice and hard – and before Dennis got a bit hooked ... LP, Vinyl record album

Deniece Williams

This Is Niecy
Columbia, 1976. Very Good
Genius work from Denice Williams – a singer who'd cracked the charts a bit as Denice Chandler, with a little girl soul sound, way back in the 60s – but who's grown up considerably by this essential 70s set! Chandler's voice is still a bit high – almost in a Minnie Riperton sort ... LP, Vinyl record album
