❔

The third collection of Billie's Verve studio recordings, produced by Norman Granz. Billie's backing group includes performances by Benny Carter, Harry Edison, Barney Kessel, Jimmy Rowles, Paul Quiichette, and Wynton Kelly, and features the songs "Trav'lin Light", "April In Paris", "Lady Sings The Blues", "What's New", "Good Morning Heartache", "Sophisticated Lady", "Strange Fruit", and "God Bless The Child".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Billie Holiday

Strange Fruit
Commodore/Atlantic, 1939/1944. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great issue of some of Billie Holiday's classic sides for the Commodore label – a company she didn't work with often, but home to some of her best material of the early years! The tracks here were mostly recorded in 1944, but the set also features some early bits from 1939 as well – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Solitude

Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday (MGM)
MGM, 1959. Very Good+
One of Billie's last sessions – recorded with beautiful large backings by Ray Ellis, and a heartbreaking tone that may not show Billie as strong technically as on some of her earlier albums, but which is pretty darn compelling nonetheless. Anita O'Day

Anita Sings The Most
Verve, 1957. Very Good
Anita sings it swinging and simple – working with a smallish combo to back her up, and vocalizing in a relatively uncluttered style that's in keeping with her best mode at Verve! The tunes are mostly standards, sung in a way that bridges swing and later styles of jazz vocalization – no ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Early 60s. Very Good
Quite a popular live album from Ella – recorded in Berlin at the height of the cold war years – featuring a famous recording of "Mack The Knife" that almost blew away Bobby Darin's hit with the cut!
