We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mercury, 1959. Very Good+
A great session from 1959 – one that features John Coltrane playing with the Adderley group, recorded in Chicago when they were stopping through the city with Miles Davis' combo at the time! In fact, since the rhythm section includes Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

It's Necessary
Mercury, 1977. Very Good
One of Jimmy's last albums for a major label in the 70s – a real back-to-basics set that was recorded live at the Jimmy Smith Supper Club in LA – the "home of fried cornbread and live jazz", and a venue that we certainly wish we could have visited! Jimmy's working here with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Music For Hi Fi Bugs
Mercury, Mid 50s. Very Good
The title makes this one sound like a batch of bachelor pad tunes, but the album itself is easily one of Pete Rugolo's best of the 50s – a really tremendous big band outing that's filled with all-star players – all in a groove that breaks Pete very firmly past his Kenton heritage! Great Pyramid
Mercury, 1976. Very Good+
One of the most spiritual, soulful albums ever from the great Charles Earland – a set that's almost his answer to the keyboard styles of Lonnie Liston Smith in the 70s – and done with a very spiritual vibe! We love Earland on Hammond – but here he also plays Fender Rhodes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temple Of Birth
Columbia, 1975. Good+
A little bit later than his classic funky stuff, but still a very nice batch of grooves with Jeremy's hard flute sound out front, and good backing by a small group that includes Alphonze Mouzon on drums and Richie Beirach on electric piano. Cuts have a good electric funk feel to them, and include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brother Jug!
Prestige, 1970. Very Good
One of Jug's funkier albums from his time back out of the pen, and a tasty electric session with Billy Butler on guitar and Sonny Phillips on organ. Pretty Purdie plays drums, and he kicks it nice and lean on the great groover "Jungle Strut". The album also features a nice version of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of Rahsaan Roland Kirk
Atlantic, Late 60s/1971. Very Good
A great collection of work that Roland Kirk recorded for Atlantic – some of his best-ever, as far as we're concerned! And while we'd recommend that you get every Roland Kirk album on Atlantic you can find, we also know that they're pretty darn hard to find on vinyl – and this ... LP, Vinyl record album
