Lots of Midnight Magic from The Commdores – still nice and funky at the start of the evening, but also chilling out in the wee hours too – really finding a great way to follow the trajectory of the night with the tracks in this set! The album sparkles with strong arrangements and production from James Carmichael – who furthers the vibe perfected on Natural High, yet continues to avoid most of the cliches that would slow down the group in later years. Lionel Richie's given room to step forth on the ballads "Still" and "Sail On" – but the group feel is still nicely maintained on the rest of the record – which also features the tracks "Getting It", "You're Special", "Wonderland", "Sexy Lady", and "Might Magic". Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

In The Pocket
Motown, 1981. Very Good
An album that definitely lives up to the title promised by The Commodores – a record that takes all their raw funky energy of the early years, and fuses it into a new groove that would catapult the sextet to superstardom! The sound is commercial, but still has a pretty fresh sort of feel too ... LP, Vinyl record album
Natural High
Motown, 1978. Near Mint-
A pivotal album for The Commodores – still very funky here, with a sound that stays true to their roots – yet also able to reach out into some of the mature mellow ballads that would make them a huge crossover act in years to come! Diana Ross & The Supremes Join The Temptations
Motown, 1968. Very Good
Motown's two slickest and most successful groups match up perfectly in this surprisingly nice album from 1968! It might be easy to write this off as a mistake or inessential session – but thanks to some great arrangements by HB Barnum, Paul Riser, and Gene Page, plus great vocals by the ... TCB
Motown, Mid 60s. Very Good Gatefold
One of the odder 60s LPs from the Supremes, the soundtrack to a film that starred the group, with some guest appearances by The Temptations – in Motown-show versions of tracks that often feature the singers lapsing into medleys of other tunes, or doing some popular hits of the day. Rise Sleeping Beauty
Motown, 1975. Very Good+
One of Lenny's first solo records – rawer than later work, thanks probably to the fact that he produced the record with Chester Thompson. Thompson plays organ and arp on the record, and gives many tracks a nice heavy funk sound that's similar to his and Williams' work in Tower of Power. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Forever Michael
Motown, 1975. Very Good Gatefold
A great one from Michael Jackson – easy to miss between the pillars of his earlier work with his brothers, and his later stuff with Quincy Jones, but equally great for that reason! The album's got Michael singing in a smooth soul mode that's really nice – almost like Smokey Robinson's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Innervisions
Motown, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. The album's got the same jazzy references you'll find on the best work by Donny Hathaway ... LP, Vinyl record album
Diana & Marvin
Motown, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
A surprisingly nice album – even if you're not a fan of Diana Ross! Given that Marvin and Diana are standing back to back on the front cover, we kind of get the idea that there wasn't as much sympathy in the session as on some of Marvin's classic duet sides from the 60s with Tammi Terrell ... Wiz – Original Cast Album
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good
The original first recording of The Wiz – the super-soul musical that remade Wizard Of Oz for the 70s! The hits here are familiar, but the music is actually pretty great – handled by hip Harold Wheeler on most numbers, and really stepping forth with a nice mix of soundtrack grooves and ... Motown, 1963. Very Good
An album of dance-oriented tracks by The Miracles – recorded to cash in on the big early success of their hit "Mickey's Monkey"! The set leaps and jumps with the same sort of energy as that great track – a side of The Miracles' talents that's a bit more upbeat than usual. ... LP, Vinyl record album
