A surprisingly modern set from Johnny Griffin – a rare major label session that's based around some really wonderful tunes penned by Johnny himself – arranged beautifully for a very hip septet! In addition to Griffin's tenor, other players include Steve Turre on trombone, John Clark on French horn, and Dave Bargeron on tuba – all musicians who create a mini modern brass section, of the sort you might hear on some of those great late 50s/early 60s experimental dates. Griffin's tenor shines out amidst this mix with a great undercurrent of soul – getting strong rhythm support from Michael Weiss on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums. The writing is a real surprise – a great indication that Griffin's still got plenty of fresh ideas left at this point in his career – and titles include "Dance Of Passion", "Dawn", "The Way It Is", "Take My Hand", "From Here To There", and "You've Never Been There". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
